Tim brought me to this bit of minimalism, quite outstanding by Kronos. Ian I was going to add it to your Minimalism Thread till I tried and realised it was locked up, so here it is. BBC have a prog running just now, "Tones, Drones And Arpeggios: The Magic Of Minimalism"

I’ve unlocked it Alan.
BTW- worked out a very easy edit procedure which makes everything I record in my kitchen (which is an awful room) meet ACX standards every time.
Normalise to -3. Sample noise in readiness for later noise removal. Work out noise floor from ACX analyser and set gate to reduce by 100% Listen and make sure all words get through cleanish. Undo gate. Set gate to reduce by say 70 minus the actual dB reading of the noise. Ie ... if the noise floor is at 50, then set gat to reduce by 20. (That gets none speaking noise floor to -70 which will rise a bit later) Play with speed of gate if any words get clipped. (Normally lengthen) Apply gate. Take a listen and if noise comes in audibly when gate opens, use a SMALL amount of noise reduction until you’re not aware of it. Hard limit the peaks slightly. Equalise if you want. Normalise to -3 again. Check with ACX.
I’m getting really consistent results that sound noiseless. ACX comes up with an extremely low noise floor. Sometimes -80 to -90. That’s the equivalent of a Rode NT1 on a high quality preamp. That measures 5dba noise which is about -89db. I can get better!!! Very often, I don’t need to use noise reduction when the gate ids worked out mathematically from the meter reading.
Two wonderful tools for lessening noise ...
Saramonic cheapie preamp Triton Fethead.
I record at level zero on Tascam DR05 and use the Saramonic to adjust. Using AKG D5 dynamic mic, I get a ridiulously low noise floor. Been working alongside a recording engineer who really sorted my problems with cheap gear. Learned a lot.

Hi Ian, that's just about what I now do with my readers submissions. I'll first normalise -3 then gate at around -29.70 with a reduction of -35db. That takes out a mass of junk, yes you have to watch that words don't get clipped it depends on your reader, if they tail off words softly you might have to raise the threshold. I then manually troll through each file removing louder breathing noises by selecting and amplifying a bit of breath by -35db then using CTRL-R work on through the files removing anything which isn't speech. That way you retain the natural speech rhythm which would be altered if you just use delete. Would only use the Classic Noise reduction sparingly if at all. EQ with NOVA as little as possible, mainly dess, I have one lady reader who (I think) bumps her mike so, if so, I'll High-pass at 100hz which fixes the bumps. Depending on the reader I will limit either hard or soft with Limiter No.6 (using just the Limiter section) then normalise at -2 for the ladies and -3 for the men. I'ts all good fun. Not used ACX so I'll have a look at it now. By the way I've been using the £18 Behringer dynamic ever since you put me on to it for my own audio contributions, built a small preamp for it, absolutely brilliant sound for speech requires no post recording work apart for the odd "comp" "re-take" edit and normalise for a consistent level. The noise floor on my system is "black hole" unless my almost 80 year old hearing is a bit suspect. (NOT) Alan

A friend lent me Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott - Crooked Calypso CD. My initial listen was - ARE YOU SERIUOS As I like Paul Heaton I thought I better give it a few more listens to see if it grew on me. I don't like all the tracks but I would say 8 out of the 16 are not bad at all. I tried to find the tracks I liked on youtube but could only find these two: You will need to listen to them 3/4 times but in particular the words. She got the Garden: Silence is:
