I have uploaded a newer version of the HD681 EVO article HERE scroll down and click on the Superlux HD681-EVO link on that page. I added some info on the last page on how to obtain the response in the post above. It involves buying a cheap set of pads of fleabay. The plot below shows how closely a modified (filtered) HD681 with K240 pads compares to the HD681-EVO with fleabay pads.

Heh, what a coincidence. I've just modded another pair of MKII EVOs with 1/2 felt disc mod and decided not to tape the holes and vents as well. Sadly, I won't be performing the filter mod but I'll definitely get those chinese pads. Perhaps I'll dig what they do to the sound. Nice find!

If you find them very overly bassy/warm you will dig it. When you feel the stock one has just enough bass you'll (probably) hate it.
There are other pads still on the way from Belgium and hope they arrive before Wednesday. They might be different as well.
Will update the article if needed.

Oh if that's the case then I'll wait until you receive those other pads then. It's amazing how certain pads can influence sound while others not so much. Yea, shipping from china is real PITA ; )

MadMac's pads came today and measure almost exactly the same as the e-bay pads. This means not really suited for the 'old' HD681 but VERY suited for the HD681-EVO. Green = Ryan's store (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/606703)= $ 15.- incl shipping Red = ebay pads (http://stores.ebay.com/wang-yifei-2009?_trksid=p2047675.l2563) = $ 16.- incl shipping The needed mods with these pads differs from when K240 or original Superlux 'velvet' pads are used this is described in the latest pdf.

I think the chinese pads are a bit better sound-wise but how do they compare build quality and comfort wise? Which one do you prefer?

Comfort wise they are very good. The Chinese pads are not 'finely/precisely' made though (see pictures in the pad article).
Both Chinese pads are the same in all aspects. Superlux pads are somewhat better in build quality and in sonic signature very close to the K240 pads. The K240 pads are nicely made but also the most expensive.
On the EVO both chinese pads sound good and once fitted have a similar appearance to the Superlux pads.
Comfortwise: Chinese > Superlux > K240 Build quality: K240 > Superlux > Chinese
Don't know about longevity of the used foam in all pads.

Just got the eBay pads that I ordered. They are indeed more comfortable than the default pads (pleather). Sound-wise, they are great too. Definitely lowered the bass. Sounds better than the default/stock sound IMO. Mods that I did was to change the pads to the eBay pads and the half felt disc.

You might be having too much highs because the half/felt mod should be done in conjunction with the inductor/resistor. If you feel the highs are O.K. you can leave it as it is, if you feel there is too much high simply glue the other half of the felt disc back or replace with a thinner type of felt.

Okay guys, question time
I got a pair of stock 681 (red ring). I am content with the sound, though the treble could need a SLIGHT tweaking. Would stock Evos be better for me? Again, I am really content with the "general tone" of the regular 681.

The regular HD681 is massively improved in the treble region by one of Solderdude's filters. There is a Mk2 which takes the top down and leaves the bass pretty much intact or a Mk 3 version which takes the treble down and also shaves the bass hump that the HD681 has. I quite like the Mk2 with the bass left but the Mk3 is 'flatter'.
These filters really make them into a much nicer headphone.

Okay guys, question time I got a pair of stock 681 (red ring). I am content with the sound, though the treble could need a SLIGHT tweaking. Would stock Evos be better for me? Again, I am really content with the "general tone" of the regular 681. The stock EVO's will sound dark and muddy compared to the stock HD681. If you like the stock HD681 with it's forward sound you might not like the EVO as it is a LOT darker sounding. It is not the old HD681 with slightly less highs at all. The forward and 'open' sound of the HD681 is not present in the EVO. You could buy the EVO and rip out the felt disc and use it on the HD681 and you can also fit the velour pads that come with the EVO and slap them on the HD681 as well. Then you could buy the cheap pads from fleabay and you have a 'flat' headphone and a 'tweaked' HD681. These EVO's and Chinese pads don't cost that much.
