Well... some people seem to prefer the EVO and do not find it dark sounding at all.
A filter or the felt on the EVO driver may be what's needed to do the trick.

I've just received the chinese pads from ebay and they don't seem to be that bad quality wise. The foam disc seems kinda meh though. Nonetheless a great find, thanks! On an unrelated note, are there any upcoming superlux headphones in the pipeline or perhaps some newer versions?

You might be having too much highs because the half/felt mod should be done in conjunction with the inductor/resistor. If you feel the highs are O.K. you can leave it as it is, if you feel there is too much high simply glue the other half of the felt disc back or replace with a thinner type of felt. 100% agreed. I'll be undoing the 1/2 felt mod since highs have become unbearable with the chinese pads. Frans, your judgement is as always spot-on

Hi,
how can i reproduce the filtermod of the Evo with the parametric EQ of a Sansa Clip Rockboxed ? I would like to simulate the mod with : R1 = 68Ω, L1 = 1mH and R2= 39Ω and felt disc removed.
I have the new evo with the stock velvet installed

Hi Linskun,
Welcome to the forum !
low shelf -6dB freq point 500Hz (roughly it will not be exactly) high shelf -5dB 5kHz
do not use the 3 parametric bandfilters (set to 0)

The LS filter needs to be set to 500Hz.
Don't use the PK filters...
If you need to declare the Q parameters for the shelving filters as well set the LS to a low value (between 0.2 and 0.4 ?) and HS to 0.5 to 0.7 or something. It won't be the exact same correction as you will get with the filter but closer to it. Can't test it as I still have my Fuze in stock condition.
Personally though I found the EVO to improve it didn't sound as good to me as the HD681 does. Tonal more accurate but lacks some clarity the HD681 has (raised 3kHz part)
I DO like the EVO better with the just Chinese fleabay pads and felt on the drivers. All that is needed is to replace the pads really.
If you want it a bit better sounding I can recommend the Chinese pads + inductor/resistor and half pad modification.

The minimum Q parameters are 0.5 for LS or HS on Clip 8GB.
Personally i removed the felt disk from driver and now it sound much better and fun for my taste.

Hi, I'm new here and a proud owner of the 681 EVO and big thanks to the mods and guide made for this fantastic headphone. At the moment, i have removed the small felt dics and it sounded more clearer to me. I'd like to know if the foam behind the drivers can be removed as well? The foam can be seen in the vents at the back. Will the removal of the foam behind make this more airy and give more sound stage? Hope you could give me some thoughts regarding this mod. Thanks!

The foam behind the driver must remain there. I have not tested what removal of this foam does but most likely will affect bass/midbass/mids response mostly.
To get it to sound more airy but have a LOT less bass I recommend to use the Chinese pads + re-installed felt discs or (even better) the felt discs cut in half and electronic filter inside + the Chinese pads.

Thanks for for your suggestion. The reason i wanted to do that mod is to imitate the fully open type headphones like ATH-AD700 and hoping to have more sound stage and sacrificing the bass or low frequency to be used for PC Gaming. Do you think it's possible? I wanted to know if someone have tried this mod before.

The foam isn't really behind the driver. It is filling a 'closed' chamber that ends in the 6 baffle 'ports'. Closing those ports showed an increase between 100Hz and 400Hz and made it darker sounding. Perhaps removing the foam will make it slightly less dark sounding.
To remove it you have to loosen the screws in the baffle as well after you removed the cups. The EVO certainly doesn't become more open as it will remain 'semi closed'.
The AD700 is fully open and closing those rear baffles only makes the AD700 more 'cuppy sounding' but won't improve the bass response (I suspect, don't own one) The bass amount in it is limited by the driver, earpads, construction.
Of course it cannot hurt to try it. Please report back if you do and if the sound changes substantially I might open up my EVO again and measure the results.
I haven't tried this potential mod though.

I'm glad by your response with details. Yes, i also think it is just a foam like filling and as a noob, i don't know the effects of it and thanks for the tip. I will try to remove the screws later and remove those foams behind. I'll try to respond as soon as i can since i have to compare the results in between and it may take longer since i'm new to this. My goal is simply just for PC Gaming and not for overall sound quality and since this has been done by you guys already and we all appreciate it.

I've tried removing the round paper filter at the back of the driver and thought it was a foam material. lol Anyway, i feel the bass was lessen and sounds more lighter? I don't know the right term. So far I'm liking it and with the felt removed. Some may like the felt on to lessen the sharp highs.
