The TH900 has more midbass/lower mids than the THx00 which is more linear. Also the THx00 has less treble but still peaks, just not as much. The Dakoni pads help in the treble area for sure. Some toiletpaper in front of the TH900 driver is likely to help reduce that peak. Here is the message I was referring to. But regardless, thanks for the info on the dekoni site!

I'm really wondering if the sonic differences between the Dekoni pads would be more suitable to the Purplehearts instead of the Mahogany... Any expert opinions on that?

twgib: Frans, you should help us determine the differences in the tuning between the Mahogany, Ebony, and Purpleheart so one could be modded to sound like the other! Would save me a lot of money in trying to find out what they all sound like!

Jude Mansilla (Head-fi) already measured all versions on the same rig so perfect for comparisons. I took the liberty to re-allign the plots to better show the tonal balance differences.

Indeed that is excellent information but I was hoping that the tuning differences would show themselves on the driver baffle plate or something similar so that users could modify them to sound as the others! Isn't it a myth that the type of wood accounts for that significant of a sound difference?

Yep, wood differences won't show in the frequancy response. As these differ well over 5dB it clearly is a matter of differences in drivers or porting or dampening of 'ports' maybe even on the rear of the driver by using different density damping papers or slightly larger holes.
Wood will impart its sound in instruments where the wood is thin and it vibrating imparts different overtones.
In headphones the wood is VERY thick compared to sound pressure differences so won't have any influence. Certainly not as reflections from the rear cup are usually a LOT softer and are overpowered by the sound of the driver anyway.
Different woods just give different looks, the tuning takes care of the sonic differences of the driver itself.

I've got a PH and Mahogany that I might have to dissect and see if I can spot the differences myself! Thanks,

Zach from ZMF says different types of wood have "a slight effect on the timbre of the headphone, but does not affect the frequency response of the headphone. Things like decay, speed and transient attack are slightly affected by wood choice, while the frequency response attributes remain the same."
I guess it would be possible to detect very small differences in a test, but mostly the wood is for the looks. The different types of X00 are tuned differently and will sound mostly the same regardless of the wood you use.
Some people had wild experiences when changing cups...i have my doubts.
