I have a TD160 in the attick... needs a new belt and the arm must be replaced. Is lying in a box on top of it. no dustcover alas. Also have the famous philips 22GA212 (needs the motor repaired and lamps replaced as well as the headshell mechanism cleaned) and also a Technics SL-J1. The latter is a nifty device... small and linear tracking. The motor or belt needs replacement (terrible wow) The SLJ2 is a direct drive version and you can select songs on an album by just selecting song '3' for instance. When start is pressed it goes to where song 3 starts and plays that song. Works well on a lot of albums but sometimes doesn't work well. The J1 (and J2) have a 'skip' function where it stops playing and goes to the next song. A bit like early CD player controls...
I would go for the TD160. You need to check the arm lift and belt for proper operation. Otherwise a classic and great deck.

i do like the look of the 160 , Frans.
generally (anyone) are the older suspended units more forgiving to distortion than all these modern rega/project decks that appear to me to have no suspension?

Don't know that one.
Looks nice ... and is Direct Drive so no belt that needs replacing. In those days equipment was made to last a lifetime.
Does it come with a cart ?

From my experience Simon, its not what type of suspension or whether its more forgiving than this one or that one. I have found placement of the deck is more important - if you can get yourself a good WALL mount turntable stand and isolate the deck from vibrations such as foot fall on wood floors etc it is far more important than the type of suspension? Although any suspension should be well set up.
Something like this:
I personally would make myself one - it would not be difficult and a hell of a lot cheaper Having said that I bought two of the above for my gear P1030757 by Chris Walmsley, on Flickr

i believe rega and project do cheaper wall mounted brackets, but they dont look as nice as yours, Chris I have an old Target Turntable stand that has been stuck in my loft for 20+ years Simon. If you are interested you can have it for free, all it needs is a quick rub down and a quick paint with some black hammerite and it will be as good as new? Pics: Pm me if your interested.

just taken a punt on a used Rega RP3. fingers crossed!! missed the above but have committed to a 2yr old Rega3 from an "AoS" member at £100 less. its not the latest version of the deck but looks like new condition and i figure the saving i've made will buy a fair bit of charity shop vinyl. and the best bit for me is it is within my original budget. this never happens!!

pics or it didn't happen...
Funny how good vinyl still sounds. That is despite the cracks, pops and noise. In the end it's all about the music and enjoyment of it.
