The higher the sensitivity the louder it plays at the same volume setting. The lower the impedance is the more current is drawn at the same output voltage. When a speaker impedance is lower a lower voltage rail in the amp is needed to supply the same amount of power.
High currents can be problematic for an amp. Low currents not.

decided to trial some different speakers to compare to my zensor 1s.
just trying out some Dynaudio emit m10's. the Dali's were a massive improvement over using any pc desktop speakers and i was very happy with them when i bought them. the Dynaudio's are certainly up a level again. i was not really expecting much differnce, considering the similar design, size, spec and my placement restrictions. was instructed to let them burn-in as although they are demo unit's they are brand new. have them until tuesday, may then try something else.

Dynaudio is one of my favorite speaker brands. Love the smaller ones. These are so much more 'dynamic' and 'open' sounding than other speakers in the same (and above) price class. The Dali's are a fine lower budget buy though and use Dali's as computer speakers.
My home made speakers use Dynaudio woofers.
Went to listen to active monitors a while ago. JBL, KRK, Genelec, Mackie, Adam etc. To me the Dynaudio's popped out clearly above the rest.

gonna try the bigger m20's as i'm so impressed with the m10's. the guy in shop reckoned i would have issues with bass(with the m20) as they would be too close to the back wall. looking at manuals for both, they state minimum 500mm from back wall!!!!! both models are marketed as "compact bookshelf speakers". now if the back of the speaker is supposed to be minimum 500mm from back wall then thats one mighty big bookshelf!!!!

had the m20's for a couple of days nearly now and i dont think they suit as well as the m10's. the shop could not provide the bass port bungs so i have made some using straws! this seems to have removed the majority of the bass boom from the back wall, but i just think the m10's sounded clearer with more top end. (all this of course is going to be down to my restricted listening/positioning problems. will be picking up the m20 bungs tomorrow but cant see them helping too much. may try some B&w's next as some of their models are front ported.
one thing i have noticed going from headphones to speakers, you just dont get the top end detail from speakers (not at this price anyway) i think i have been spoiled by my hd800's.
i do wonder if adding a small sub to my dali's may work, but surely that would create more noise downstairs through the wood floor?

just my luck!! picked up a set of Monitor audio silver 50s for home trial on thursday, shop said i could keep until tuesday coming.
i get them home started playing and for a second i thought i had not properly connected the right hand speaker. i then realized it was my right ear that was not working. started putting oil drops in that evening and got an appointment for today to have them syringed, or so i thought. turns out the nhs shy away from syringing now. i have been told to continue with the drops for 2 more weeks then go back, but no guarantee of them being done then either!!
i have noticed "ear wax removal" clinics are popping up everywhere now too, theirs a coincidence!!! we have one right next to our hospital and they are quoting £68 and they use "microsuction". they claim microsuction is the safest method for clearing ear wax. i have googled (as you do) and found a few horror stories of people ending up with tinnitus following this procedure. so dont fancy taking the risk. had my ears syringed several times over the years with no issues, so finding this situation really frustrating. any of you had any experiences on this?

Simon, you might want to look at this site that where I bought some records when I had vinyl - I had totally forgoten about it till they sent me an email. At the moment they are offering 25% discount for the next 3 days if you use the coupon code - sale25 at the checkout. Only problem is you must spend a minimum of £50 for the code to work You can download catalogues of what they have in Excel format. www.classicrecords.co.uk

as i'm searching to upgrade my speakers now, i have a question. looking at specs of speakers i keep seeing "crossover" frequencies quoted. am i correct in thinking that unless you know the FR of the woofers/tweeters involved, you can ignore this spec? if this is so, why are they quoted?
i understand what a crossover is, just cant understand why the figures are quoted.

It's just a spec that is easy to give, as meaningless as frequency response (without cut-off points) and distortion figures at 1kHz etc.
In general you would not want any crossovers between 300Hz and 3kHz as the ear is quite sensitive to phase and delay issues and XO filters do have phase shifts there.
XO point is not nearly as important than the SQ of the individual drivers and the design and practical way the XO is made. It is fine to design an ideal XO on paper but another thing to build one with actual parts.

There are many different LS3/5a speakers. Has quite a cult following. Not as good to me as is hyped.
While being a decent speaker with a pretty neutral tonality the ones I heard were a bit 'boring'. should only be used in small rooms. Lack of low bass is compensated by a small boost of mid bass. Highly dependent on placement.
Not nearing Dynaudio quality for sure. More 'polite' and less dynamic/open.
