Spdif would depend... if the Spdif has a transformer in its circuit this will provide galvanic separation. Some designs, however, do it via another way so it would depend on the used output and input of the equipment in question.

HD 650 in da house Nice to see you have a respectable piece of gear there for the Ember. Should be a much better musical experience for you. It may well alter your perceptions concerning 'good' sound. The HD650 was a real learning experience for me in home hi fi. I also use HD650' s as well as the HD600's. Love them both. The HD650 has a more 'civilised' treble than the Hd600 which is flatter in frequency response. It may help to have the output impedance set to low. The 650 is glorious at high volume since they're so smooth. Had mine since they came out.

The HD600 doesn't need one really, the HD650 can improve in that it removes the 'warmth' and makes it more neutral (closer to HD600). It sounds more like an HD600 with balls (due to the slight lift in the subbass) and while retaining its lower distortion. The HD650 has less distortion than the HD600 which one can hear in female voices on very good recordings. That's what made me decide to get the HD650 instead of the HD600/580. The distortion added by the filter section is many factors lower than that of any headphone.
I don't use my HD650 any more though, only the filtered T40/T50RP and DT1350 (portable) mainly. Ortho's are simply 'better'.

Output impedance is set to low already. What is the difference btw low medium and high with hd 650? Don't ask... simply set the jumpers to medium and high and have a listen and hear what it does to you. With the HD650 it is subtle but audible. The HD650 is very good in retrieving the smallest details and subtle nuances. There are not that many dynamic headphones that can do this that well. Most headphones that sound 'overly detailed' do so because they have a peak in the highs which eventually becomes 'unreal' to experienced listeners. Not so with the HD650 and many ortho's.

The only burn in effects I am aware of is the pads compressing over time and people adjusting to the sonic signature. Opinions on this subject vary as much as those of tubes Just listen to it and stop wondering if it has enough hours on it and simply get used to the sound. Warm and or older pads have a difference compliance (how much pressure is needed to compress it) and the DISTANCE between the ear and driver has a definite influence on the overall sound signature. A 'leakage' (bad seal) affects bass and because of this the overall sound quality. The bigger the circumference of the pads the bigger the chance to a bad seal. If the pads get smaller and the pinna doesn't 'fit' in there anymore can have the same effect (not creating a seal).

Thank You Ian, now I understand what you meant by hi resolution I can hear vocals which never existed before! It's a good headphone that often gets unjust criticism. It's very speaker like in sound and tbh, I tend to mostly use the t40 or 50 or the Senn HD600 or HD650, depending on how much bass I'd like, but the 650 is slightly more refined than the 600. Biggest criticism ..... the pads are too expensive to buy. Don't stretch the headband too much. The paint will literally crack and come off. I have a Beyer headband pad on the crown part. Makes them very comfortable and hides any cracking paint.
