I'm glad (and relieved) that you like them Chaz!! I always worry about what I write in case I've given someone a 'bum' steer.
I also enjoy mine a lot. In fact, while reading your post I'm listening to Black Sabbath on them myself while the wife watches TV. They don't go massively deep like the CAL2, but the CAL can also sound a bit too hefty down there so the AE51 is a 'tidier' listen.
You have exactly what I feel written there. The cost of these is something that is overlooked. They are amongst some ot the nicer 'cheaper' headphones and I really like them, warts and all.
I felt kind of the same about the 'Fanny Wang' headphones. Obviously aimed at kiddies and more like 'designer' wear but they sound OK to me. Not a lot of extension but nicely balanced.
The AE51 seems nicely balanced sounding too.
Although graphs etc tell you a lot about a headphone, they don't tell you the whole story and I think we're all well aware of that. In any case, the graphs paint you a picture but they don't paint the picture of the headphone on your head and your ears.
I'm well aware that I prefer a raised bass in all truthfulness. I like 'flat' as long as the treble is way in control and not piercing in 'timbre'. If it is, the bass can help (for me) and it compensates for that top.
The T40 I have is pretty flat but it isn't hard on the top like some headphones. Many would think them not revealing as a result, but they are actually extremely good.
The filter that Frans made for my T40 actually lifts the top of the AE51 and it sometimes helps them sound more open - depending on the source. It's a very handy device and actually lights the CAL2 up!! That doesn't mean that they're flat though. I just like the sound and I'm happy with that.
The AE51 is nice for mobile use as well. It's quite big but it isolates and you have a great sound - even from a 'Zip Clip' playing mp3. The company will probably go in the end and everyone will want them because they're hard to get!!!!
