To be honest Simon, not that many closed headphones seal that well. If I rub my fingers together right by my ear, then I can't hear it. If I click my nails, I can. I can listen on them with the tv on. i just need something that improves big time on the d2000, as these may as well be open! Derek appears to rate the isolation of the oppo pm3, but i would need to buy used due to budget. i am watching a used dt1770 on ebay at the moment , which i understand to have decent isolation but worried if they may be fake, hence my suggestion. paranoid now

Me too!! It was quite a surprise to me and my mate went ape!!!
The MSR7 is worth trying if you can get one in a shop somewhere. It's better than my previous impressions were from what I read.
The dt1770 might take some driving for portable use. TBH, I'm VERY wary of EBay now. I think I'd go full price to be safe.
My mate was lucky to get all his money back without even returning the headphones. That was because I threatened legal action. The company stated that they were in the U.K. although they weren't, and when I pointed that out to them, they immediately paid up.
I still shopped them to EBay and Audio Technica though. They've put out loads of those headphones to people who are completely unaware.

i understand what you say re the dt1770 and dap. i would probably need a portable amp or update my X1 to something with more oomph. i will most likely be priced out of them anyway, they just caught my eye.
my head(and wallet) is telling me to get the 662evo, i understand the isolation is real good. my heart wants something more "upmarket". will i ever learn?

That's a good price but still too expensive for me, sadly.

The dt770 is no slouch. Another of my favourite closed tbh. If you're ok with an amp, they have a short curly lead with an adapter so they're ok with a portable amp.
I have been using the msr7 portable without an amp but the dt770 pro with an amp. In fact I am now, listening to some Santana and the bass just goes so low which is a great attraction with them. £102 New as well. Prime BBC radio 2 headphone that one!!!
In fact, the bass is profound!!!!
Being 250 ohm, even the Fiio e12a drives it since it doesn't need a mass of current to get it going.

No, I mean the dt770 Simon. Great headphone.
If the dt1770 is too expensive, the dt770 is the one. Huge sound.

No, I take it neat!!!!
I do have a filter for it as well on my Kameleon but portable, it's lovely. I'm using it portable now and it's a terrific sound really for a mini setup.
I'm using an x5 into a Fiio e12a which isn't that high powered. Because the dt770 doesn't need oodles of current, it's fine, even on low power. Vol pot at 12 o clock and I can walk around the house with it!!
TV is on and I can't hear it. (Unless I turn the music off)
Comfortable as hell. That's why I switch from the msr7 actually. Lots of ear room.
If you want more isolation, there is a dt770m which was designed for recording drummers. It pushes down harder on the head and is the same headphone.
The most common description of it is very raised bass and treble with recessed mids. I find it absolutely fine though tbh.
This bloke is a bit eccentric, but he likes it too ....

Yes Simon. Dt770 pro. 250 ohm. The 80 ohm has a slightly bigger bass and perhaps less at the top. Like so many Beyers, they have a treble peak, but it is matched by the bass which is low as anything.
They have what I'd call a huge sound. There may be fakes, but no one has brought that up so I don't think they've been particularly targeted. It's the urge to save money that leads to these fakes. They tend to be just under normal prices.
If you're thinking of the dt1170 then the dt770 is the closest thing really. Kind of like a headphone with subs. Not like the Denon d600 sound which is woolier. I'm listening to the Blue Man Group and bass can almost be felt because it's very deep.
The filter balances it up a lot, so I guess a portable version might suit you for a dt770 if you find it too bassy and sparkly.
