of course the one drawback for me is the short cable. i would use these for late night viewing at weekends when the wife is in bed, so would also need an extension cable.

I use an extension for tv with short leads and then they can be used mobile as well.
Good for tv. Speech is crystal and low bass kick ass when it goes, without merging in with the mids.

if i get the chance of a cheap k550/1 then i may try them later in the year. i use to enjoy my old hd280 for movies. i just think from what you have said across the 2 threads, the d600 would be a warmer/darker sound and more to my liking. having said that , as we all know , our ears adjust pretty damn quickly to whatever we chuck on them.

I love films with the D600. Huge sound. They really do sound cinematic. You might need the Beyer padding on the band to keep them in place. They're big.

So now, I hope the K551 shows similar traits as the K550 that has gone to an adult student. (Lucky devil) he got it without VAT and will claim for it on his tax as well!! So it was truly cheap for him. You've got me interested in the K550 now Ian I remember I was not interested when you offered me the pair that you gave to Dave, - but reading Fran's recommended headphone section he seems to rate them highly when modded. My main concern with headphones is isolation from outside interference ie TV? I am sure my wife is deaf, I can always hear the TV when I want to listen I may have to put a pair of these on my wish list

I'd describe them as a 'clean' headphone. Fran's mod takes the peak at the top end down and shaves a bit of hump off I think. (In the bass) my rogue one sounded slightly different. It was a bit weightier and less shrill. Not typical AKG.
What is very surprising is extremely low bass. It's definitely there but not on every recording.
Bad recordings sound dreadful. They ARE harsh.
The pads do need warm up time as well. Real bass comes through on my head after about five minutes!!

Thanks Ian I will bear that in mind, I may have to get my bum around to Richer Sounds and have a little listen one day? I like the idea of Fran's mod being in the cups and not a separate filter, don't know if similiar things can be done to the DT770's. My couple of gripes with the DT770's are the cups are microphonic and sometimes when I turn my head they catch on my shirt collar and make a sound. the lead is not microphonic so that is OK The other gripe is isolation, they are supposed to be one of the best for isolation but I still seem to hear the TV.

You'll find the same most likely with K550 with the TV. Depends how loud it is though.
I like the DT770 too. Very different though to the K550. The AKG is more sensitive and is good with DAPS.

The isolation of the K550 is decent, not great.
I don't use mine that much could send it over for an audition and if you like it can buy it. Got mine relatively cheap. For closed HP I now use the Philips the most. It sounds almost the same but the Philips has more bass.
If you like the AKG K601 level of bass but just wish it to be deeper if called for this is it.

The depth of the bass is why I slightly prefer it to the K601 and 612 actually. It definitely goes a lot deeper but still has the K601/12 cleanness.

Thanks for the very kind offer Frans, are your k550's modded or not? If they are modded then I will definitely be in for an audition, PM me about the details & price
