Ian, the youtube flick I linked to also says the guy couldnt' find original pads because according to his experience, AKG doesn't offer them. I'm going to try the Brainwavz, just not sure yet if I'd choose the hybrids, the pleader or the sheepskins....

A little quick update here. I bought Brainwavz hybrid/pleather/sheepskin XLs to try out on my Superlux Evo. And while I was at it, I quickly tried the pleather and sheepskins on the 550. Quickly because no time and it's also extremely easy to swap pads on this headphone (not like the Evo). The XLs fit perfectly.
Anyway, the short of it is: don't bother. While comfort is - for me at least, the original pads are too small inside and hurt after a while - absolutely superb, the sound balance is shifted a lot. Less bass, sharper treble. With the original pads the treble was sharp to me as well, but it didn't really bother me that much. With these Brainwavz pads, it does. It seems treble is, how can I say.. fuzzy? A cymbal sounded not like a cymbal at all anymore. Very annoying and also almost painfully sharp. While my 550's are unmodded, Frans's mod may help with the treble, but it won't bring back the bass. I don't know enough about this stuff to pinpoint why, but I guess the larger size of the chamber and the bigger distance from the ear to the driver have to do with it. Seal was not the problem, if anything, these pads sealed easier and better than the original ones.

I gave up looking. The originals sound fine but change them, and the headphone takes a real hit in sound. I don't know why AKG won't supply them tbh.
