Frans, a few posts back you mentioned the earpads on the AFC were on the smallish size. How small compared to the Senn. (58x specifically)? I do like what I've read regarding the AFC sound-wise, but if the earpads are smaller/more confining than the 58x I'm not sure I'll be able to cram my flappers in there. I guess if nothing else I know enough now to make sure I get a chance to try them on before buying

I totally live for marketing BS and shameless gimmickry. Heck if it was still the late 70s/early 80s I'd be making my purchases on the number of knobs and switches the device has.
I have drank the Sony kool-aid, so DSD support is a selling point and why I'm not looking at Schiit. I hope to get one of those Oppo players so I can start ripping my Classical SACDs eventually (granted I got into SACD as much for multichannel as SQ - and yes I know headphones aren't multichannel)

Perhaps I was misleading when I referred to formats. Sample rates would have been a better term.
I do have some stuff in 24/192 and a few DSD albums. The M100 will max out at 32bit/768khz/DSD512, the Sanskrit10 "only" does 32bit/384khz/DSD256. I do realize that both are stupid overkill, but if you can get more features for the same price…
I suppose the more important thing would be the USB implementation. Both the SMSL and Topping d30 offer up XMOS chips, which I've gathered tend to be the most reliable. The biggest faults I've run into using both a Cayin N3 and my Shanling M2s as a DAC seem to be connection errors. The only way the Shanling can play without clicking/popping like dirty vinyl is if I upsample to DSD (never tried this with the N3 when I had it). Even using upsampling there's a pretty good chance it'll lock up during a listening session at least once.

Hi Mr Trev! Heard you were going on the road to record DACs in their native environment (BestBuy), so thought you still wanted closed cans. But that was so 2016. Next time I'll notice the posting date, ignore it and post something inane anyways. ;-) A proper DAC? For $200 or under or $2,000 or over? $2000+ or go home! Seriously, under $200 is about right. Specifically, i'd like to spend less than I paid for my Vali2. I'm one of those people that believe the spending food chain goes headphones>amp>source Looking at the SMSL M100 right now - the part of me that pretends to be an industrial designer loves the look. It is "only" an ak4452 though (IIRC those are usually reserved for portable devices) and I've only found one review. That review is by that Zeos guy and considering I can't even sit through more than 2 min. of his videos, I don't know how much faith I'd put into his opinion. There's the SMSL Sanskrit 10 which is supposed to be decent (4490, lower format support), but the reviews I've read say that an external power supply is pretty much mandatory, and I don't know if that'll also hold true for the M100. I missed out on a great deal ($150) on an used ifi ione on CAM by ~20min. a month back. The reservation I have with that one however is that it seems the bluetooth (which I'll never use) is always active regardless of input. I don't really want a constant source of RF especially when I'm using tubes. The thing I do like about the ifi is they support all formats - imaginary or not

Mr T: My closed minded under $200 choices would be: Senn HD380 - Used in the studio for tracking quite a bit. Very punchy in-your-face bass. Lots of lobal space. Suffers from closed cup mids as most closed phone do. Seems like it's EOL tho. Senn HD569 - possibly a better sounding 598C replacement - not as much rip-your-face off bass as the 380s, but more comfy and cheaper. If you have a local Long & McQuade, might be able to demo the 380s. As well as the AT M50x aural congestion generator. HD569 at Amazon.ca for $129CDN and BestBuy (for too much altho some BB stores might have demo units). Hey Lobal, long time no chat. Actually I did have the 569 on the list. Read good things about them. But then I bought my 58x and owning two headphones from the same brand would just be weird. That said, the novelty of getting another pair of cans has worn off ATM. Sure, if I happened across an epic deal on those AFC I may jump on them. Also read some reviews of the new Brainwavz HM100 that caught my attention (one review claimed that they may be the closest thing to a closed hd600), but cans have dropped down the priority list. Need to get a proper DAC first… maybe one of those NUC things (for a music server, replace the crappy old laptop I'm using)

@ Miiksu The 4kHz dip is MUCH smaller (perhaps even not there) and seems fully compensated acc. to K712 measurements of Rtings. Below the difference between a measurement without an artificial ear (horizontal line) and with (blue trace). see plot: www.rtings.com/headphones/1-2/graph#327/2069It shows a +10dB peak between 3kHz and 5kHz due to Pinna action and the 'dip' between 1kHz and 3kHz also seems to be filled in. Still, it sounds closer to my measurements (when comparing it with Sennheisers) than to those from Rtings. The truth is propbably somewhere in between. @ Mr Trev No chance of getting a HE400i I reckon unless someone sends it to me. I think the HE400i will measure quite similar. @ shiro I suspect the K7XX is a K712 with a foam ring added. Remove the foam disc on a K7XX and you have a K712. Add a foam ring (or 1mm thick felt ring) and you have a K712. From the reading I've done, the Massdrop version is supposed to sound identical to the 400i - which I believe you already reviewed? I've also read that the k7xx is basically the same as the k702 anniversary edition - which I think was supposedly the same as the 712. There was a massive discussion on HF when they were released as to which version they sounded most like. That was a long time ago…

Nice. Any chance you getting a pair of HE4xx to trial too? Then we can have a 3-way Massdrop smackdown between the k7xx, HD58x, and HE4xx (or maybe 4-way of you want to toss in the HD6xx)

Was browsing the HF thread and somebody posted a link to a reddit where somebody has been making EQ profiles for various headphones, so I thought I'd share it here too. The EQ profiles are made to match the Harmon target response. Tried the 58x profile myself… not too bad, but my phones are still felt modded so I'm not getting the fully intended response. https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/9o2f5n/psa_oratory1990s_list_of_eq_presets/

The local hardware stores here do sell those pads in self-adhesive form. As for as the hole goes… I can borrow a leather hole punch that does 5 or 6 different sizes, not sure what else could be used. I asked the guy that posted the mod what type of felt he used and how he punched the holes. If/when I get that info back I'll pass it along in case you're willing to test it out

When he has one of those felt discs he can send it to me and I can measure it's effect. Have no head-fi account so cannot ask myself. From what I gathered those are just the type of felt pads that you put on the bottom of chair legs so they don't scratch the floors - with a hole in the middle. They are pretty dense felt from what I remember so I have to imagine the any audible change is due to the hole rather than the felt itself

My plan was just to use adhesive labels cut into circles with different sized holes punched in them (I have a leather punch with 6 different sizes). Never thought about using an old eartip as a sort of plug. Not in any hurry to pull the felt off and start experimenting however (I'm a lazy, lazy man and am pretty happy with the SQ ATM. Also, I have a horribly short auditory memory - and no way of measuring either - so I'm not sure if I'd even remember which sounds better)
BTW, I never had any intention on removing the foam, I have no problem with the way it looks
