Just my luck ....
I was listening to some music (FiiO X3) last evening.
When the next song started playing, the right channel was quiet.
Innitial thought... check cables.
That didn't do anything.
Second thought... the X3... maybe a reset ?
Didn't help either.
Plug another HP in the X3... both channels are there.
Hmmm headphone or cable broken ?
Removed the 2 short cables and plugged the 'dongle' directly in the X3.
Still no sound in the right channel.
Must be the HD662EVO.
Driver broke ?
Well have another one on the way so will have to use other phones instead for a few days.
Let's check what happened.
Time for the old multimeter.
Hmmm left side measures O.K. right side is open circuit (measured on dongle).
Time to open up the right side and measure on the driver directly to see if it failed.
Hmmm driver measures O.K., which is good news as that may be an easy fix instead of having to bin it.
measuring the connection wires from left to right (single entry headphone)
Ahhh.. the '-' connection seems to be the trouble.
Opening up the outside of the headphone (same as the HD681-EVO) which is easy to do once you know how.
Ahhh there is the culprit... The white wire running from the driver to the rods came loose from the rod.
Aside from the rods supplying the clamping force they are also used as a 'cable' from the left to-right cup in these headphones (as well as in AKG models).
It appears to have been a poor soldering job as the wire didn't break off, it just wasn't soldered on the rod correctly.
Resoldered, checked with MM, re-assembled and voila.. there is glorious sound again.
Just assuming in production models they pay better attention..
remembering now... had 2 people over the years contacting me about 1 side failing in original HD681's
In both cases it was poor soldering of wires to the rods (one of them my own soldering job... shame on me)
