Has anyone tried an O2? I'm quite curious about the claims that were made concerning this amp and wondered how you found the sound if you have one.
I notice that they are put together by a company in the UK at £99, so are now readily available. However, the makers are quoting a 3 week lead time which is a pity. You'd think they'd put a few together and have them ready to go, wouldn't you? It wouldn't cost the earth to have say, 5 of them ready!!
Reports (apart from NWavguy's own review!! are quite varied.
There are some design anomalies as well. One being an old idea of putting gain before the potentiometer in order to lower noise. Reports suggest that it is actually, extremely quiet in operation. In fact, if it is really quiet, then this should be helpful in the 'imaging' and clarity of the amp. There are also reports that it is much quieter on low gain rather than high as well, so is this lowering of the noise due to just low gain? I have a Neco set at 3 and it makes no noise - but the gain is only 3!!
The perceived sound has mixed views though; from Headfonia's one which suggests that the figures look really good but the sound just isn't right to others claiming that this is a really 'see through' amp!!
The Headfonia claim is one that I've seen mentioned now by people who actually have the amp. They claim that the bass goes quite low for a 'portable' amp but it sounds thin and the mids are recessed.
What I'm wondering is whether this is a 'minute' difference, since very often with amps, we are talking gnat's whiskers, or whether it does have something strange about its sound. NWavguy's own graphs show it to have a superb performance so what's going on with the ears?
Anyway, putting all the hype behind the guy behind us (who really cares what he says about his own amp eh? ) Have YOU got one and what do you think?
Also, why do the figures look so good and yet people are so widely varying in what they say about it?
