Thanks for the explanation, Frans. Will it be an open frame design, like Ember - or in a metal box?

I suppose an open frame.
It could of course be fitted in a metal enclosure if the big capacitors are laid flat.
I just design and test it (and tweak if needed) from then on I hand it over to Jeremy and he does with it what he likes. Can't be bothered with production, shipping, warranty, advertising, keeping stock and making investments. For me the design/test/tweak process is the fun part as well as helping people out with problems.
The portable filtered amp will be handed over to Javier. Will support him of course.

I'm already checking Mundorf caps, hand wound resistors, rhodium plated connectors, etc.....

For the SS, that is sort of the idea, a lay flat design that can easily be put into a metal chassis. Basically very low profile. The metal chassis I am working on will be a semi open design with some screening but will retain the look of the current amplifiers. Same with the metal option for the other chassis I am working on. Hopefully my chassis guy will get his new CNC in soon so the fun can begin!

Hi guys, a quick question regarding a bad tube. I ordered a few extra tubes from ebay to try out for fun in my ember, a tung sol 12ax7, raytheon long plate 12au7 and an amperex bugle boy. The bugle boy I just got in last night so I tried it out. I think it may be bad, but I have no idea what a bad tube sounds or acts like. I plugged it in, and get very loud hissing with no volume (gets lower if I change output resistance but definitely still there), and as soon a I start turning up the volume, the left channel thumps, hissing doesn't stop, and the right channel is very noticeably louder. This sound like I just got a bad tube? Thanks

Certainly looks like it.
That tube might still 'work' in an all tube amplifier with overall feedback though.
Jeremy has a tube tester.

Thanks Frans, I was thinking it must be bad just because all the others sound fine with little, to no noise. Oh well, I didn't spend a fortune so no biggie, I just wanted to hear a bugle boy for the first time. Haha. I'll probably hit up J for a 6dj8 sometime soon to try out. Thanks again

Hey Tdubl07, Yes certainly sounds like a bad 6dj8. Feel free to send it in and I can test it out - or return it to who you bought it from.
Hey Dicky, The semi-metal enclosures for Sunrise, Horizon, Ember and even starlight will be a bit different in that the caps are not laydown and will still be seen through parts of the chassis as with the acrylic designs. Looking forward to the solid state - it will be very neat - very low profile and slick looking (as I have it imagined physically)

Hello all, I've placed an order for a Project Ember (built, that way it will work and not be on fire) and I'm looking forward to hearing what difference it will make to my HD580's. I bought them more than 10 years ago for £85 and have, in the last month spent more than that on giving them some much needed TLC (£40 for earpads was a bit of a shock though). I have never used a dedicated headphone amp before but I'm really looking forward to hearing the difference (esp the tube) it will make.

Will an existing kit retro-fit into the enclosures or are they for new builds only?

I am currently using a schiit modi as my DAC and am maybe planning to upgrade to a bitfrost, however, it would be cool to have a matching G1217 DAC. Is there any chance of you guys producing a matching DAC to go along with my ember?

A dac would be awesome - but if it ever happens, it would be quite a ways off. Nothing this year I would imagine. I have been trying to weigh out the demand for such a thing when there are some really good options which I cannot complain about in the $100 range. Dicky - They are designed so that one can buy the metal case for their existing amplifier and it will be a virtual drop in other than a small amount of physical work. And yes, not an amp in a box - they will be semi-open. I, and others are rather fond of the look of our current designs so it would be a shame to stick them into a can. The metal chassis will be similar to the acrylic designs. Depending on the generation, one small component will need to be added to ground the chassis properly. Starlight, Ember and Sunrise / Horizon III have the provision on-board to add this component. I wanted these cases out but other projects more pressing are shoved in the way currently and my CNC guy is waiting on his new machine so this is getting pushed back. Now that the supercharger is available, next #1 priority is to get the linear released as it has bluntly - taken me to long. Then metal chassis. After that I need to invest in cloning technology so I can make at least 3 Frans and 3 more of me

I see the super charger is available to order with the ember is it also available to order separate yet?

I contacted the seller and he's being very cool about it and just sending another one straight away. So hopefully the second one will work flawlessly. And is it me or does rolling tubes not make such a drastic difference as others would make you believe? Between the three or four I've tried, the differences are very very subtle. Maybe the tubes I've tried are not so far different as to create a vastly different sound. So far I've tried the stock tube, 12ax7 and a long plate raytheon 12au7.
