Is that really USD 1.8K? I'd personally would never spend that kind of money on a DAC unless I won the Euromillions and if I did I'd probably consider other choices...

Javier, please feel free to talk me out of it? Job done I reckon Qutest isn't the word I'd use to describe it. Looks like the Mojo who ate all the pies!!

Looks like the Mojo who ate all the pies!! i agree job is probably done, though i may consider a used 2qute as i think prices will drop a tad. it is certainly better looking. having said that, i do love a good pie!

If I had such kind of money burning a hole in my pocket I would consider something like this: www.thomann.de/es/rme_adi_2_pro.htm?ref=search_prv_5It is expensive but it has been designed by true engineers for studio usage (rough?) and provides a ton of functionality including a high performance ADC, XLRs, etc.

dont get me wrong Javier, i dont really have that kind of money to throw at a new dac. i have always fancied the 2qute and may get tempted later in the year.( only if used prices drop under £500, which is unlikely) i have, for a long time, considered myself to be dac deaf. i am now just curious to know if that is still the case since owning the hd800, as to me, they seem more revealing. realistically i am more likely to try the "Pro-Ject Pre Box S2" (and i may wait for a used one of them!!!) what i did not really want was any unit with an amp built in, as i'm sorted with Ember and V200.

just going back to my comments about the possibility of getting a used 2qute in the near future.. i have read that the output voltage is 3v instead of the usual 2v. could this have an adverse effect on the amp used?
reason i ask is based on comments by Rob Watts regarding the 2qute "was never intended to drive speakers".
i currently use my idsd micro to feed 3 amps... Ember, V200 and pm7003 speaker amp.

That question fals into Frans' field. Neat trick to make it stand out in comparisons though. We tend to equate louder with better.
Sent from my SM-G930F using proboards

I think the standard line out is 2.1V so over or under, wonder why they chose those

A higher output voltage on a DAC is to influence people into thinking it sounds better than the competition. It works this way: One DAC has 2V out and another DAC 3V When people are comparing DAC's they usually swap the DAC out and leave the volume control as it is.
A (slightly) higher output voltage = slightly more volume = always found to be 'fuller' / 'better' sounding.
A real standard is +4 dBu which is 1.228V which has a peak voltage of 1.736. Most DAC's have a FSD of 2V which is 1.41V which is + 5.2dBU Seems to have become some type of a concensus. With a 5V power supply voltage about 2V peak is easy to create.

(and surely an external speaker amp is also going to colour the sound)
