Beautiful little player. I have been watching the market and thinking of a new purchase as well, but I would also like to see some form of parametric eq on the device. Maybe I am asking to much for the price range - but she sure does look smart!
I am still using my 30gb zune as my primary portable. She has served me well and is in mint condition - kept in the silk sock that it came with. Battery still holding at over 10 hours which is amazing considering I purchase the unit in 2007! Sound is excellent but also no EQ. Just a bunch of presets which work well enough. Trying to get all the use I can out of it as it was not cheap when they came out at over $240-250ish. The only downside which really does not bother me, is when loading music to the zune, I have to start the zune software and let it sync. With my fuze, it was always drag and drop.
I also loved my fuze (same version as you have Frans) The only thing that frustrated me on the Fuze was that with the SD full of music, I made a playlists which I used for ages. I accidentally ejected the SD and put it back in once... poof my playlist was gone! Other than that, it served me well. And the kids - wife also have one. They had a refurbished clearance on 4gb models for around $30-35us a few years ago. Could not pass it up!
Anyways not to yap about my zune and fuze, this little fiiO looks great and the SD add on card is a smart feature. For some reason the look of the DX50 has my attention more however but do not fancy a touch screen. Will wait to see reviews about it - see if it has any onboard EQ function or even tone controls. Not that simple bass / treble would not make me happy... may just do the trick!

Frans, I've been doing some reading on x3 and some of the HF members say that the x3 continues to drain power when off! I know that some of these things don't go off properly and sit in standby but one guy was going on about it holding power for just a day!! Unless he'd left it in some kind of pause mode, I can't see how it could eat up power. Other things mentioned were poor software interface and dust specks getting under the screen. Is yours holding its power ok? I charged mine a week ago and listened to it for quite a few hours. Still didn't have to recharge it. All players with a software switch draw some (very little) power in standby. After all a circuit is 'watching' if someone presses a button to go on. My Fuze hadn't been used for a while and battery was empty. Charged it but only a blank screen and didn't do anything any more. Had to look for the reset switch in the manual and only after a reset it started working again (fortunately). Now I know it is good practice to put the Fuze away charged and if I don't use it for a month or so to check the battery status and recharge. By the way best to put something with lithium batteries away with about 70% charge in it. Alas not many devices will tell you how many % charge it has. I haven't had it for that long to get dust under the screen (very careful with these things, all stuff I have looks mint even after many years) The guy complaining probably has a faulty device. He should return it under warranty I reckon.

Well, I did wonder how on earth a battery got depleted in a day with no use. The nice thing with lithium is that you can charge any time. Once you can stop the ocd habit of always running them flat like we used to in the old days, it's very useful since you in effect, never run out of power as a result. (Normally)
This tablet I'm using has quite low running times really, but the fact that you can put it on charge whenever it's convenient means that you really don't notice it.
My Clips lose power if left as well. I just top them up as well.
I presume the Fuze is still working? Such a pity that they don't make these devices with easily replaced batteries like phones. My Ipod Touch needed a new one and what a job that is. They expect you to throw them away and get a new one.

The HE400 is actually a quite efficient and easy to drive headphone. It needs only 0.33mW to reach 90dB where as the T50RP needs 2.15mW so at the same setting the HE400 plays 8dB louder than T50RP. That is almost twice as loud.
The FiiO X3 reaches about 150mW into 50 Ohm which means 108dB should be possible with the T50RP. For me it isn't an option as the X3 only has bass and treble tone control and I only like the T50RP when filtered which isn't possible.
On high gain setting with treble +5 and bass -1 it plays the T50RP pretty loud. With pretty loud I mean that you may be able to listen to 1 song that loud but after 10mins would be having a splitting headache.

Found something peculiar about the X3.
I have it set to random and when I did this before it selected random songs when a song has finished. Now when you click next it selects a random song but the next song it picks is the following song of the album it was playing and even the next song in line. In short it plays random when you push skip forward or backward (doesn't skip back to the previous song heard as the Sansa does) but stops playing random but goes in normal play mode after a song has finished until you hit the back or previous song.
Don't know if it is a bug or that I accidentally set it this way.

Frans, at the risk of saying the obvious, is it possible you have accidentally set it to play 'Random' albums rather than 'Random' tracks? Dave.

It doesn't have that many choices. One can only select: repeat all, A-B repeat and shuffle. It also has a separate 'play all' button.
It did 'random' before but I have set it to 'repeat all' while it was playing and after a while set it back to 'shuffle' again (while playing)
Did set it to shuffle again while not playing, maybe that helps.
I read the manual and this is the only thing it came up with: How to shuffle play cross folders? Set it as shuffle play, and choose any song to play under “Play All “list.
As it did shuffle before and I had selected to 'play album' and set it to shuffle while in that mode may have something to do with it. Will play around with settings.
I do like this player a lot and doesn't need additional headphone amps. I don't think it is a bug but rather a not really specified/specifically mentioned feature by design of the firmware.

When it was time to shut the FiiO X3 off I found the buttons to not respond and the display to remain dark (the FiiO X3 kept on playing normally). Had to reset it (press and hold the power button > 10sec) and it switched off. After it turned on it worked normal again.
It also has a reset 'hole' in the top but did not (need to ?) use it.
Only had to reset my Sansa Fuze once over the years.
After the reset the 'shuffle while playing' function also was restored.

Frans have you tried any headphones directly out of the player yet?

Yes, even modified T50RP and used the tone control to 'mimic' the filter for it somewhat. It drives them pretty loud !
I use it in low gain mode on 'normal' headphones and you can drive HD600/HD650 quite well from it. No need for a portable amp !

It does sound like a good 'un. Does it contain a big battery Frans? I also meant to ask before .... Can you take the battery out and put another in?
Sent from my HTC Wildfire S A510e using proboards

Hey Frans, Any updated musings on the X3 and how life has been with it over the fuze? I have a chance to pick up an X3 locally for rather cheap - new on box and weighing my options.

Battery life sometimes seems short but it is playing quite often and sometimes the whole evening.
It has 'frozen' 3 times already while playing or while operating it. The display freezes or goes blank and buttons do not work any more but music keeps playing. When you press the power button for at least 10 seconds it switches off and when switched on again it is business as usual.
It can play most headphones really loud and in high quality.
What I miss is a good EQ but I don't at the same time.
Another quirck is when set on random it 'skips' to a random (semi random sometimes you hear the same songs but haven't heard them all) but once playing is stops being random and plays the next song. Maybe I do something wrong though.
All players have something weird so don't think it is that bad.
All in all I really like it and only grab the Fuze when the FiiO is charging or do not want to drag the relatively large FiiO around.
For the price it is a good player and don't think the more expensive players will offer better SQ (though many claim it sounds different). I have to admit I never heard other uber players but do own some other players aside from the Fuze and X3 where some have never heard of (NexIIe, NEXIa, and a few 'cheapies').
