I will be trying a few custom 3.3FW versions with 'better' themes soon.
One thing I don't like in the new theme opposite the original one is that now the first screen is icons only.
I like the text to be there, like in the early versions.
This is what the custom FW does... functionality = FW3.3
I went looking for this after seeing this video of the X5 with custom menus:
I would almost buy an X5 so I could look at the artwork alone.

The firmware is on the player.
I thought there would only be one theme after the update but the guy that made the firmware version added 2 'themes' to the already existing FiiO themes.
Looks quite nice and is closer to what I am looking for.
The fun thing is that this is fully 'legal' in fact FiiO has asked people to make more skins and provides the software with which you can change the screens.

I actually prefer not having a wheel, Frans. It's not as smooth as the Ipod wheels and I suspect it might be the source of breakdown eventually. It's pivoting on its centre so if you push down when turning, it can feel a bit rough. I think Fiio might need to do something about that.
Apparently the electronics are improved on the x3 though so it might sound very good.
Now I wonder whether x3s will come down in price in order to make space for an in between model, or whether they just stick it between x3 and 5 to get those who worry about going up to the x5 price, which is beginning to get quite high for a dap.
I've kind of got used to the buttons of the x3 and feel that it's more robust.

Got nothing but digital ticks from my x3 today on playback. Had me going for 10 minutes. Answer ...... I had switched from X1 to X3. The headphone sockets are not in the same place and I automatically plugged in to the left hand socket on the x3 which is where it is on the X1. WRONG ....... that is the coax out!!!! Sometimes, I do really daft things.  |

I'm very happy with the x1 as well, Simon. You'd be hard pushed to tell the difference tbh.
Frans, have you tried the 3.34 Beta firmware? I've just loaded t onto my x3. Seems fine.

I have 3.34b running on my X3 BUT one with a (to me) much nicer theme. I can't get used to the tiles and pictograms and how you scroll through them. I use another theme that is orange and black and uses nicer pictograms + text which makes everything nicer, easier and cleaner looking. You also get a slightly different theme + the original FiiO themes to choose from.  the theme can be downloaded from here: www.dropbox.com/s/eelosz6cz6iznv4/x3.fw?dl=0the only 'downside' I noticed that when there is no album art a black background is shown where in the FiiO theme you get a default picture. I've noticed a curious thing playing mp3. Nothing drastic but ....
If you use folder view, you can get a small click at the start of every track.
If you scan the files and play via album or artist view .... No click.
For gapless, they do say use album view, and I reckon that doing this shortens the gap between tracks but also takes that click out.
The click is also sent through digital out.

The X3 II will be released in the UK next month. It looks as though the sound is slightly improved on the old version which can be had at around £130 now I think. I read a few reports from USA that seem to say it ihas improved on the original bersion in terms of sound.
Frans, is that lovely black and orange theme still around from anywhere?

The X3 the theme can be downloaded from here: www.dropbox.com/s/eelosz6cz6iznv4/x3.fw?dl=0just download it, unpack it on an empty uSD card and slide it in the player. press the upper right and lower left button and the firmware is updated. Ensure your battery is fully charged and don't touch anything while it is is updating (takes about 15 seconds) You will still have the current themes as well. I only use the orange one. It is based on the 3.34 FW and has the song limit removed. It hasn't given me any trouble yet. |

It's no longer there Frans, which is why I asked.  I'm comsidering an X5 now tbh. I like the X3 so much that instead of going to the X3 II, I womder about the X5 next tbh. Great little players. Fantastic with better files. |
