That's a good description, Syd. It sounds a bit 'deader'. I noticed it when I first got it and assumed that it was just me having the volume in a different place. Once I felt there really might be a difference, I contacted Ifi about it and what puzzled me was the discrepancy between a public response and private email. Publicly, they tell you to adjust power for the pot. Privately to me, they said that changing that gain might well have improved the synergy (at that time) between the idsd and the Senn hd650. On high power the hd650 really takes off to my ears.
After hearing the Nighthawk, which was rather strange to say the least, I started to compare with another rolled away headphone when it's unfiltered, the T50 which I love as a headphone. First of all, the NH made the T50 sound spot on by comparison and highlighted just how good the Fostex is really. High power on the Ifi was too much for the NH but it works fine with the T50, but once again, I noticed the T50 sounding more lively and 'musical' if you like.
In fact, it seems more pronounced with the T50, so it makes me wonder how the power reduction in the Ifi is implemented and whether it can affect the quality of the sound. Ifi themselves quietly acknowledged that it might, due to synergy but I think it could be something electronically designed in there that just deadens the sound a fraction when switched in.
It's probably very slight but I am noticing it because I'd been comparing the NH before it went off to Frans with other headphones.
The Ifi Nano also produces a slightly fruitier sound with the T50 than the Fiios for instance as well. Nice thing about the T50 is that it's less sensitive than other headphones and actually works quite well with the Ifi Nano. Others pick out hiss from the amp.

has anyone on here updated the firmware of the micro? Have you done it Simon? I did mine in seconds. I have no idea what it does but the Micro is now running V5 on a check. For anyone who hasn't, you just download and unzip the update. Then boot up the updater in the Ifi folder. The programme has a box where you locate the update and simply press start ... Seconds later, it's on. It's so quick, you'd miss it if you blinked. how do i check my current firmware mate? i am looking to update, but want to know how to check it first. i have downloaded and installed latest driver, already. (2.26) have also downloaded latest firmware and am ready to update it. cheers

The updater programme reports what is currently on the IDSD, I think Simon. So when it's attached with the updater booted up, I think that there was a window with the software version there.
Tbh, I can't even remember what version I have on mine now. I did update not too long ago, but didn't really notice anything different in sound. One annoying thing came up when you are using it and plug in so I canged the version to an a, b or c one. There was a choice, but I can't remember exactly what it was. It was something to do with power while using it I seem to remember.
Presumably, you have downloaded the Uodater from Ifi? That takes care of wverything for you.

You can check current firmware using the update tool, it shows both the one you have and the one going to be installed.

You made me check. I'm on 5 so I'm going up to 5.1 now.
It is the Updater on the 'info' tab.

Sorry Simon. Just done mine so I'm on 5.1 now. It literally takes seconds.
Browse your computer to 'Programmes' and look for the Ifi folder where the driver is. In mine, the updater is in there marked as an exe file. Click on it directly and it will boot up. It doesn't appear in any Windows menu.
In the updater, browse for the download bin. (In my case it was 5.1) and load it onto the updater.
Press 'start' and seconds later, your IDSd is updated.
I have a feeling that the updater is installed when you set up the driver and no one seems to tell anyone about it!!!

now its stuck on magenta and will not play on youtube!!!

How strange. Mine went on and ran straight off with no problems. You've really been through the mill with computers recently, Simon.
I wonder whether it might be an idea to do a reinstall just in case there is something wrong still? I guess you're not feeling confident with so many things happening with your gear?
Does anyone know if the digital converter leads are available anywhere? I'm after that little 3 inch patch lead that goes from femail coax to mono jack that fits onto the digital coax lead. The Fiios all use mini jack plugs out so the converter is needed which is a bit of a pain because I can't find anyone who supplies the damned things!!

its been playing up again tonight afterall. tried re-installing the driver and firmware 5.1 with my kaspersky IS disabled, but to no avail.
have done the same again just now but used "5.1B" just in case it makes a difference.
so far so good, but not overly confident it will last.
