That sounds very interesting, I hadn't thought of using SMD caps, 1206 is reasonably sized for surface mount but the part you gave the reference is 3.2mm and the pads are either 2.54 or 5-08mm, can it still fit? it is certainly much cheaper than the 14.85€ (!!!!!) they ask for its TH counterpart ref. RS 721-5293

It'll fit because the 2.54mm is the hole distance. The pads themselves are 4.5 mm from adge to edge so the 3.2 mm sits on there nicely.
Simply place the part on top on the pads and apply solder.
For the actual filter components TH C0G/NP0 is recommended or film type. X7R can also be used if the C0G/NP0 are not available

Can input coupling caps be omitted if source is DC free?
Ermm.... which caps are part of the actual filters? in p. 36 C0G/NP0 is only sugested for Cx01 and Cx03, are Cx04-Cx07 the real filter caps?

Can input coupling caps be omitted if source is DC free? yes. (you need to mount a wire in that case) Ermm.... which caps are part of the actual filters? in p. 36 C0G/NP0 is only sugested for Cx01 and Cx03, are Cx04-Cx07 the real filter caps? Only Cx01 is a coupling cap the rest of the Cx0x caps are filter caps. The Cx caps are all decoupling and may be X7R or Z5U (preferred = X7R) It is completely pointless to use C0G/NP0 for decoupling purposes. Film caps are not recommended for decoupling

"The LCD2 and LCD3 will basically sound the same with a filter attached to it AND be perfectly flat as opposed to shelved with a little peak in the highs in stock form."
wow now that is interesting, that equates to one heck of a saving if i buy lcd-2 and filter as oppose to lcd3 (which i could not really afford anyway)

"The LCD2 and LCD3 will basically sound the same with a filter attached to it AND be perfectly flat as opposed to shelved with a little peak in the highs in stock form." wow now that is interesting, that equates to one heck of a saving if i buy lcd-2 and filter as oppose to lcd3 (which i could not really afford anyway) I know it seems improbable but really isn't. The differences between LCD2 and 3 aren't that big. LCD2: LCD3: original measurements are here: personalaudio.ruThe main difference is the LCD3 has a a few dB less presence between 1kHz and 8kHz and thus sounds slightly more 'mellow' Also the LCD3 has about 5 dB more top end extension above 12kHz. This is where the 'air' and 'small finesse' is located and this makes the LCD3 a bit more mellow but with better detail and air. The fun part of the filter is it 'corrects' what is missing (and it IS missing something) and the peak in the highs is 'equalized' so it isn't a peak any more. This is possible for both types and both need slightly different corrections of course. In both cases the end result will be better than the stock versions and as they are virtually the same headphones but with slightly different damping and small changes they will sound very closely the same and bot will sound more 'natural'. Without the filter the 3 sounds 'better' yet both are sounding dark and coloured but with GREAT lows and mids. I am familiar with the LCD2-rev1, never heard rev2 nor LCD-3. Also did not hear any of them with the filter.

Trust me, the difference between the LCD2 and LCD3 in stock form is not worth the price difference, although i did prefer the LCD3. The HiFIMAN HE6`s have the same edge over the 500`s, but at a more respectable price increase, so worth the extra cash IMHO. Mick. i agree with that theory. there is no way i would pay for new lcd-3. i am hoping to arrange a trial of the lcd-2/3 he500/6 on the 27th of this month, so i will know more what suits me then. what i do know, whichever i decide to go for , i have got to get one of Frans' filters to go with it.

took the plunge and ordered the lcd-2 today. this is probably a daft question, but will ask it anyway. does the filter board affect soundstage at all?

No it doesn't change channel separation BUT a lot of spatial info is in the area above 4kHz and since that is brought up to flat levels you might experience better imaging as the brain doesn't have to fill in the missing info.
When the one you ordered doesn't have the problems that seems to plague some of them you are in for a real treat !

i assume you are refering to the lcd-2, regarding the supplied FR graph?

From what I understand some LCD2-s are plagued with spread between L and R driver or drivers going 'dead' all of a sudden. All hear say but thought the one Mick auditioned ended up defective and ronzo56 (member here, you could PM him) had returned his for repair as it did not sound correctly. The one I heard (v1) had no problems and still works O.K. A.F.A.I.K.
Of course on the web you only read of people having problems or being disappointed with what they thought they would hear. The ones that are perfectly happy with them will outnumber them considerably but not all will post that theirs has no issues.
Best lows and mids I ever heard from a stock headphone.

Well... they are OPEN headphones... and emit almost as much sound outwards as inwards. BUT a great sound it is.
Enjoy them !
