it lacks sub bass or rather it's there but attenuated. it's like a well designed sealed box book shelf speaker I suppose, it's very similar to the hd650 as well. you don't know it isn't full range until you compare.

Same as th50 then. You're not that aware until you listen on something with deep bass. Actually, the peak 'sounded' stronger before modding it. If anything, it's now a fraction darker than the hd600 or should I say, less open, but there is a peak in the treble as well which gives it some sizzle. To be honest, if you had a t50, it's a no brainer. Very little effort for a much nicer headphone. And to think, I thought it was good at the start when I got it! It's improved now quite a lot.
I think the pads might contribute to the slight lack of air and velour might help. Trouble is, the bass might need retuning then.
I think the biggest difficulty is deciding how many vents to cover without a measuring kit. Doing it by ear is tricky, which is why I used the T40 as a reference to gauge it.

there is a pretty active t50 mod thread on head-fi, they seem to suggest damping the rear of the driver will tighten the peak and improve the extension but that would mean popping it open ...

Yes, I've seen the thread. It's become a bit messy because it's not always clear which version they're modding!!
I have no problem opening it up and damping the back. I've had a look and it is amazingly empty in there!! Damping could help I guess. I need to get some lambs fleece from a local farm or some damping material from somewhere to try it. The T50 is very easy to open.
It has become an impressive headphone though.

It seems that the Shure Alacantara pads are the ones to go for. Memory foam, deeper and more comfortable and keep the sound intact. Trouble is that no one seems to sell them!!

From experience they're very hard to get hold of if you're in the UK or Europe. Took me quite a while to get a pair - got lucky on ebay after months of looking. Amazon.com stock them but won't ship to the UK (silly distribution restrictions I suspect). Other US sellers will but works out very expensive. Shure UK stock them but they charge a flat £15 (!) shipping on all orders. The agent I spoke with said it'd be better to ask a UK Shure dealer, either Hifiheadphones or Custom Cable, to order me some in (approx. £35-40). I tried hifiheadphones which was a mistake. They always seem to bungle my orders and after 3 weeks of getting mucked about I gave up....fortunately the pair on ebay popped up shortly after (£30 via global shipping program so no customs fees etc.) but they don't show up on ebay very often. If you are keen to get a pair I'd either call Custom Cable to see if they can help (usually very good) or if you have a friend in the US ask them to order from Amazon and forward on to you 'under the radar'. Failing that you can get 2 pairs here and some nice headphones thrown in as a sweetener www.richersounds.com/product/headphones/shure/srh1540/shur-srh1540....they were worth the effort though

I do Ian. They're not cheap but I really like them. Sound good on the Pandora, very comfortable and also quite breathable. Probably the best pads I've used. In the US they sell for around $40 I think, so a bit cheaper than you'd get them for over here. I'd actually been thinking of asking you if you wanted a loan of the Pandora at some point. I think it's a special headphone and much more 'convential' sounding than the NH. If you were interested I could include the alcantara pads so you could try them on the Fostex if the shop can't help. Alternatively I could just send you the pads on their own if you wanted to try them before you buy. Re. that Amazon listing. I'd hope you'd get some free headphones thrown in! I'll do my pair for £400 if interested?

Tbh, I quite like the tuning I've hit on the t50 by playing around with vents, but someone came up with these Shure pads so I was interested what they'd do. I had no clue just how difficult they are to find though. Might be best not to send them thanks. If I start liking them, I'll be forever looking for them.
For a minute, I thought you had the Shure headphones!!
The T50 is now a pretty good buy tbh. It has a stronger top end than my other t50 and modded t40, and with the ability to tune the bass level with the ports, you can go from quite bass light to dt770 monster like. Quite amazing really.
The idea of being able to adjust the level of bass that you want is really nice. Pity they didn't fit a sliding door arrangement for them. It looks like they have to be adjusted in conjunction with pads though, so I'd probably have to do a retune!!
It's quite funny because they sound unassuming. You go to something else and then, when you return to them, they sound just right by comparison. Very unassuming headphone, but tonally, very good. I might look at the closed one now as well. The T40 is extremely good once modded and I'm now wondering how much the new one can be manipulated as well.
The only thing about them is that they are pretty insensitive and take some driving. Great with the Ifi.
Aha.... The firm I contacted has phoned back and can get me a pair. £34 with vat though. I have to pay vat now I'm retired!! Bugger.
