i had nothing to lose so i started opening up the micro. it is a fiddly job. anyway, as i was sliding the board out of the back end of the unit, i noticed 2 spring loaded grounding pins. the left one in the pic is clearly stuck in and not grounding to the case. cant seem to unstick it. i did think of just touching the outer case of the pin with a soldering iron to see if it would expand and let the pin spring out. any other ideas?

The micro doesnt have many parts that can go wrong. Have you checked if the USB connector pins are OK? Any burn signs on the board or conponents?

tbh mate no i didnt. i found it difficult to move the board so did not get it completely out of the case. the little switches on the side are fragile and dont align correctly with the internal grooves of the case. if you think it is worth it, i will try again and post pics of the board?

if i had a usb/spdif i could have tried the coax input, just to see if its the usb side of things that has gone.

this may be a dumb question but i will ask it anyway.
is it at all possible that i may have fried my ifi by overloading its output in some way.
the way i have had it connected is as follows.... the rca outs go to my hp filter then into the xlrs of my violectric v200. i have the rca connectors of the v200 configured as outputs which feed my Ember. the line-outs from my Ember in turn feed the power amp inputs of my marantz speaker amp.
if all three amps are powered simultaneously , could this have damaged the ifi?
i wish to avoid this happening again, if so.

I wonder whether you had a dodgy unit in the first place, Simon. Are the solder joints from the usb joint ok? That gets most plugging in and out and possibly stress, which is why the blue wire can play up.

if all three amps are powered simultaneously , could this have damaged the ifi? Nope ... the ifi is only connected to the filter. The latter has no DC coming out of it, nor any pulses and is very high impedance.

i posted over on CA forum and Ifi have asked me to enter a support ticket, which i have. cheers

have tried my scabby old ipod through the 3.5mm jack and that sounds ok in both headphone amp mode and pre-amp to my other hpa's.
problem seems to be on usb input. i am hopeful it is repairable at reasonable cost.

posted the micro off to AMR hq yesterday. i have been quoted a shade under £87 if it needs a new board. this includes parts and labour, return shipping and 6months warranty. A NO BRAINER, if ever there was one imo.

Not bad at all really particularly when you consider the warranty. Even if you plan on selling on it'd be money well spent.
