My point about tube amps is that they differ substantially for musicians and for hifi. Using hifi tube amps for guitars is pointless and vice versa, which was the point I wanted to make.
Tubes and their typical distortion/behavior for musical instruments is used to create a 'tone' and a sound signature that is very distinct. As you had experience with tubes and guitars I wanted to make a point that while tubes are used in the music industry to substantially change the sound, in hifi this doesn't apply. The differences are small at best.
The differences between the SRIII and Starlight are small/negligible to some yet noticeable to others.
The SRIII has different options and a class-A single ended output stage, but the same tube voltage gain stage as the Starlight which is what makes the sound signature. The Starlight (with 2 NJM4556 IC's per channel) can also provide lots of current but instead of a class-A stage (which gets quite hot) it has a typical 'high powered' C'Moy alike output stage where you can change opamps. You have the option to roll tubes and output opamps.
A third option might be the Solstice which is basically an Ember but without auto-heater select and has the same output voltage as SRIII/Starlight but with the same high current output stage the Ember has. It is similar priced as the SRIII.
If you like to or plan on swapping out tubes a lot, the autobias function is a blessing. If you don't plan on rolling tubes that much SRIII or Starlight are good options.

I've got to admit, the Starlight looks like it has a lot going for it. It's a very tempting offering and I'm really leaning that direction. I like the efficiency of opamps, which done properly can sound very good. I was originally looking at some of the popular Chinese products, but I hate buying Chinese when I have better choices. I plan on making a decision and purchase sometime this fall, after my truck is paid off. Meanwhile, I'll keep reading the forums and learning more about your products.
Thanks for giving us home grown options! I'll support you all I can in my own limited way.

Hello folks, what do you have to say when you join a forum like this. I have some hi-fi gear....not top notch stuff but enough to hear music which is what it's all about..right? Looking at getting some decent headphones and ended up with a link to this site. I come from NE Scotland so many a day is spent huddled round the fire. sometimes I actually get round to lighting it (old one I know) anyway, I'm here now and can sometime slip into Doric. Sadly Google translation does not cater for Doric....sorry.

Welcome to DIYAH. NE Scotland always attracts my attention because there's a rather notoriorious guy up there to say the least!! Nice to see you posting since we do have members who have never posted one thing, which I've always found a little strange. Get stuck in. Nice guys on here.

Gordon's not that bad once you get to know him really Oh you meant somebody else?....my mistake. Good to have you here Brian. There are a few Scottish guys here and our banter sometimes throws folk a bit, but they're getting there. Ian can actually lay down some pretty good Scott(-ish) smack talk now and we've managed to get Ron hooked on IrnBru and teacakes...Doric might still be a bit of an ask though! Very good & welcoming bunch of guys here who are always willing to give you an honest opinion and just as importantly value yours. If you're anything like me you'll also learn a lot during your time here and most likely enjoy the banter

Hi,
I'm miGse. I've been on this forum for the past few days, but just decided to create an account yesterday. I'm new to audio stuff, and got my first audio gears (HD600,Modi2&Magni2)about 2 months ago. so I have no reference with other gears. Just would like to say my appreciation to Frans,Ian,Javier, and Jeremy for sharing your knowledge/products. And also to other members for helpful posts. I have no Garage1217 products yet..I'm still trying to learn so I at least I have an idea of what I'm buying. And also to enjoy music without unnecessary expense.
Cheers!

Hi. It's expensive Al right, that's for sure!! Trouble with hi fi is that it's so addictive. I have 'key' setups for different situations and even different genres!! My wife thinks I'm nuts...... There's home and quality. Classical Rock/pop Jazz Folk Speech Home in the garden. Open when it's quiet and I want to sit with a coffee Closed for the lawnmower Outside shopping. Tiny and closed. Not to mention amps and sources. In the 70s, I was perfectly happy with a Sennheiser hd414. Welcome to DIYAH.

That's the way I look at headphones / IEMs too Ian. My Wife made the mistake of asking me why I had so many headphones. Once. She never made that mistake again (not sure if it was the 30 minute talk or the powerpoint slides that convinced her) I also started with a single headphone, added a lot more and have now almost gone full circle. Currently down to two pairs of headphones and one IEM...must admit I'm starting to feel a little exposed.

I really don't think one headphone does it all. They'll play sound but don't always get the best. Let alone what you're doing when listening and what surrounding noise is like.
I know that many think Grados suck. Try them with speech and they're great, where Senns can bloom too much. Momentums have too much mid bass ...... Perfect for mobile outdoor, when you kind of need a bit more bloom. Some of the AKGs are excellent with chamber music and acoustic jazz. The Sony V6 really tells you what's going on in TV broadcast music mixes. I find the hd650 middle of the road actually, and it plays most things nicely. I'm less keen on orchestral with them. Hd600 if I want a lighter touch from the 650. The th900 puts sparkle into dull, lifeless recordings and are quite easy to drive. The Denon D2000 puts a sparkle into recordings with less top edge than the th900, so it acts as a calmer Fostex for anything a bit brash. And so it goes on.
I guess EQ would help but I've found that anything affordable adds other stuff too, like distortion and noise. If I only had one headphone, I guess I'd get a top notch EQ to go with it.
Never stuck with one headphone in 45 years of listening.
