Thank you Frans for the new info. Perhaps even more improvement is possible as your time allows it and you figure out what changes superlux made to the driver. Can't wait for the detailed mod guide

The unmodified proto also had big dip at 5k - which change reduced it? Perhaps something similar would work here for the 3k and 5k dips?

Disappointing initial impression Frans, i hope you can work your magic and fix it. Hopefully the driver itself is not that different from the proto.

I think it's best to wait for measurements. Frans will surely compare stock pleather and velour pads since they have quite a significant impact on the sound. You could try to get 681EVO replacements pads, they seem more firm compared to the ones that came with the headphones. Not sure, might just be wear and tear. I have no issue with the fit of the HD688...small ears for the win And yes, velour is much better for me also, mostly because of the glasses. I guess you can solve the depth issue with new pads and maybe a spacer disk under the pads...maybe 5mm thick. Not sure if it would work, just an idea.

I want to get the Brainwavz velour pads - but which one? the regular or the XL version. Would both fit and the XL version would have more space?

I am really happy with the 688. Yes, in stock form they need some modifications so that's why i will wait for solderdude's advice - after thousands of forum pages and many wasted hours he's the only whose ears i trust and whose general preferences are similar to mine (him and a few other on this forum).
Don't mind superlux build quality, never had any issues with any of their headphones (681 x3, 681 evo, 662 evo). Can use them all day long without any comfort problems, but i know some can't. Do i wish they were as comfortable as HD650? Obviously. Vocals are superb to me, with some EQ to reduce bass on some tracks; on others, it's not needed or not as much. I'm sure with mods they will be great.

They do seem to have huge potential. I quite enjoy them on some tracks - i love the vocals, much better than on the HD662. I also got the 681/662 EVO velour pads, not sure if they changed them but they seem more dense than the ones that came with the HD662. Would the round HM5 pads fit/work? Using a decent Beyerdynamic cable right now, it reduces the microphonic issue but i think it's mostly caused by how the short cable is placed in the plastic housing. Otherwise, i have no comfort issues. superluc - do you have any issues with the 6-7k peak? seems fine on most tracks...not sure.

Didn't notice a problem with clarity and i'm not sure what effect the free port has. Might try to cover it at home. Only Frans can save us now

They are here, received them a few hours ago from Thomann. The pleather pads are different - there is no longer a 2mm foam disc in front of the driver, now there's a very thin cloth sown into the pad. Also the velour pads are no longer included. Opened an ear-cup - there is no padding / wool behind the driver, so no changes made there. Also, compared to the prototype, out of the 6 port holes, only 5 are now covered by the paper like material.
Only had a few minutes for a quick listen - everything seems good, vocals are amazing. I think the 6-7k peak is still there, will test at home with some toilet paper. Now for the weird part - i changed the pleather pads and their thin cloth with the HD662 velour pads with their 2mm foam disc and the bass/subbass has increased considerably, it's now more pronounced than on HD662 (maybe due to the foam disc?). With the pleather pads, the bass is lower than on modified HD662. Could be that i'm wrong, it was just a first impression, will check at home.
Can't wait for Frans to measure and modify the retail model, i'm curious why they left a port opened (i guess it lowers the bass). @ Frans - thank you for everything, much appreciated.

I still see them as available in 2-5 days. Doesn't matter, been waiting for a year...what's a few more days? I'm curious if there are any changes compared to the prototype.

They are out now, on Thomann. Noticed as well, but then it changed back to "available in 2-5 days". Ordered anyway. (glad to know i'm not the only one checking the page regularly)

The HD688 works great with stock Superlux velourpads and when ordering the HD688 would recommend to order those pads along with it. These are very cheap from Thomann. Will get the Superlux velour pads for the HD688 initially, but would pads like the round HM5 fit/work well? Also, are there any decent (less microphonic) extension cables from Thomann? (except pro snake) I can only find this Beyerdynamic one which seems a bit expensive. I can get the CORDIAL CFS 3 WY locally which i guess should be good.
