Thanks! As a Mac user, iTunes has never really been an issue. Other than loosing artwork once or twice (actually not lost, just not being displayed in iTunes), I've never had an issue with iTunes. Most of my music is lossless and I convert to 256k aac for the iPod, However, with 2-3 cards, I'll be able to play around with lossless.

Thanks Ian. I just saw on Head-fi that FIIO is releasing the 2nd Gen X1 - fiio.net/en/products/57. This looks to be a winner - at least from the specs.

Has anyone compared the iPod Classic with the FIIO X3 of X5? Just curious on impression of sound, easy of use, etc.
I have an iPod classic that is beginning to have battery issues (won't hold a charge), so will be looking for a replacement in the next several months. Having a DAP that accepts MicroSD is a definite want.
Thanks in advance,
-Tim

Hi Mark
I spent a bit of time comparing the HD580 to the HD662 for double bass and guitar. Short answer: The 662 is better with the double bass (by a pretty good margin) and the HD580 is better with acoustic guitar (but ever so slightly).
The 662 simply goes much deeper than the 580, and it really shines with the double bass. I only have a couple of recordings with prominent double bass--one of which is Bach's Cello Suites on Double Bass. The HD662 really shines!!
For acoustic guitar I played Eagles Hell Freezes Over - Hotel California as well as few tracks from Segovia, Dave Mathews & Tim Reynolds, and lastly Gabriella e Rodrigo. The HD580 picks up the subtleties of the strings and fingering easier than the 662. But It's hard to pick out. To be perfectly honest, if I hadn't been going back and forth between the two headphones, I doubt I would have noticed.
Although the 580 was "technically better", with Mathews/Reynolds and Gabriella e Rodrigo I preferred the 662. It's a more fun headphone!
Hope that helps.
-Tim

Tim, how do you find the 662 with acoustic guitar, double bass etc.?
I don't have any acoustic guitar or double bass with me at work (I'm working through my CD collection alphabetically beginning with classical. I'm on Brahms -- started in September).
I'll do a comparison between the 662 and HD580 over the next couple of days at home and let you know what I find.

I agree 100% with what Frans is saying. I frankly, find the 662 to be more fun to listen to than the HD580 (very similar to the HD600). Perhaps for classical or some jazz, I would choose the 580. But in most everything else, I'm quite happy with the 662.

Having listened to the HD662-EVO for the past few days, I can say that I am beginning to prefer it over my HD-580. The 580 produces the more subtle sounds in a recording, but is not nearly as much fun to listen to.
I don't think I'd miss the 580 if all I had was the HD662-EVO.

Thanks Frans. I agree, based on the plots the velour seem a bit bass shy. Other than that, I didn't find anything that sounded "off" with them. I'll order a pair of the pleather to try.
Other than bass, any issues with the HM5 velour or pleather? Is the "drop out" at 7k with the Pleather noticeable?

Hi Frans,
I can't tell from your graph which is velour and which is pleather and which you recommend.

I have the velour pads on. They are a very tight fit, but I managed to get them on. If you have recommendations on what additional modifications to make with the velour HM5 pads, please let me know.

I was able to get a pair of Brainwavz HM5 pads on the 662 (tight fit), but my ears no longer touch the drivers. Comfort is much better (for those of us with small ears).
Not sure yet how the HM5 affects the sound. I suspect they may not sound as "good" as the stock pads, but perhaps not too much of a degradation.

I may have to pick that up. Looks like DVD or Blu-Ray only.

I just finished the mods and agree - it creates and outstanding headphone!!! Stock, I found them a bit too bright actually. With the mod, they provide a much "smoother" (perhaps cohesive is the better word) presentation.
The issue with the pads is really that my ears are fairly small -- so they fit completely inside the ear pad. With relatively "thin" pads, my ears will touch the drivers.
Removing the felt glued to the drivers and replacing with toilet paper has reduced the irritation. I can live with these.
Thank you Frans!!
