solderdude So much modding. I'll definetely wait for ur final impressions and measuring before I will start to do more modding. I like my sound atm but seem u are overhauling whole HP. If u can use better cable and make impressions of that too I would be pleased.

Haven't tried is yet but possibly with some EQ in the 'missing' area it may well sound better. May be very interesting to also see your opinion once EQed. I use the MathAudio headphone EQ plugin on Foobar. Any advice on some parametric or graphic equalization, for those huge dips, can be useful. I use equalizer apo with peace. You can try my settings that I gave in previous post. The dips can be slightly different area, based on ur mods and HP's itself. I'm not familiar with that MathAudio HP EQ. I can also share config file but it may not be pure flatness but more like enjoyness.

No help is to be expected from Superlux. At this moment I have it sounding pretty good. Problem is the brain adjusts to sound. In itself not a problem as it adjusts so it sounds quite good now. Maybe in direct comparison it might pale or hold its ground. Bass is exactly where I want it now... deep, slightly elevated sub and not bleeding in the mids. Mids are clear sounding, highs are present and not sharp. Really need to compare it to other headphones. We are getting there I think also I have litle too much sub bass. Probably going to damper more the cups. Clamping force is so nice that I made custom made stand for this. Fits perfectly but it's ugly. Ear pads not touching

solderdude If u can Everything tips and quides help us modders. I have at the moment atjusted those two dips on middle to higher frequency with equalizer. It's now for my ears much smoother. Gain 5 dB, quality 10, 3350 Hz Left channel, gain 5 dB, quality 10, 5050 Hz Right channel, gain 5 dB, quality 10, 5010 Hz

solderdude It goes to >100€ euro if u buy genuine leather pads. But I like comfort and leather. It's a shame they shanged it too much of ur personal experience of the prototype. Let see what is in ur sleeves.

Quite different.... quick measurements. HD688 proto with HD681 velours padsstock HD688 productionstock HD688 with port (hole) closedLook at terrible response around 3kHz. The prototype was lovely there, this one has a severe dip there which with various mods/pads I tried I could not make smaller. Seems like a driver issue alas. Maybe when I mod the driver itself closer to that of the prototype but think it may be a different membrane that is used. I hope not. Very disappointing. Superlux was soooo close yet manage to bodge it up. Yes, bass response is a bit more linear and rolled off in subbass but the upper mids have suffered immensly. When you mention those two drops I can hear it on sweep tone. Its quite fast drop but audible. But I still like this more than HD662F even its cost double the price. Also I did hear extent on low bass when covered all holes with thick paper not taped.

I bended on my stomach Cups go side of ur ribs. Om quite thin guy... Don't bitching. It's my problem, not yours. It's not my fault if a difference of some mm hurt my ears. I have complain only for let that know that it may be a problem for some others, but we also already talked about the solutions. Hmm. Yeah people have different sized heads and that damping force is bad. But I was just trying to help. Maybe I should have said it differenlly.

Wow..... these sound VERY different from the prototype. These production models sound poor ! Got Tinnitus from 1 minute already. Bass quality is poor. Not at all integrated into the mids. I hope they did not change the driver that much. Certainly not worth the E60.- as they are now. Let's see if I can free up some time to mod them and write a mail of disappointment to Superlux. WT... ? One of the holes on the driver panel was fully open. It seemed different than of ur photos.

Thanks for the info guys, will try to get the XL version when it's available on amazon. Who knows when... As i can't used them longer with Evo's pads without hurt, for lack of depth, for starting i have decide to wait and order some cheap, not original nor XL, HM5 pads, that need to be stretched, and see in the wait solderdude's test and solutions. If then i upgrade to XL, it's either velour or hybrid, as i'm not a leather guy. I would personally not to use velours because they lower bass too much to compared pleather or genuinen leather. I don't have problem using glasses with Brainwavz XL sheepskin ear pads. But if u really want velour u should go for hybrid, not that agressively for the bass. I have take some measurements with a caliper, for clear any doubts. The difference is less then i was thinking, nearly 1mm in the center vs the 681 Evo without the felt, and on par with the border, but the clamping force of the 688 is much much higher, so it may have take away some other mm, from the pads. I have already try to bend them a lot, but it's always not enough. I bended on my stomach Cups go side of ur ribs. Om quite thin guy...

Added some pictures with the Brainwavz XL sheepskin ear pads Look good, even if the silver circle is disappeared How much you have pay those pads ? If I recall correctly it was something like 45€. I had to pay taxes so price was bit high. I want to get the Brainwavz velour pads - but which one? the regular or the XL version. Would both fit and the XL version would have more space? Get XL. Regular does not fit well.

The 681 Evo is like this, near the short cable: 3 very tiny wires, left channel on the red wire coming from the internal, right channel on the free rod, ground on the rod where is the white wire. Yeh, it's bad. I own HD681EVO. My worst Superlux purchase. I'm gonna open this baby right now. Gonna use soft clay to damper the cups. Mm, I have 8 different colors I think I'm gonna use that cute rose pink Edit. Mod done. Bass is more balanced, low bass so good Slightly less bass but it's now on right place. Approx 8.33 grams to each cup of soft clay. Cups still resonating but not that bad. I would not add more without testing / measuring first. I don't have testing equipment so I'm quite blind modder Edit2. Added some pictures with the Brainwavz XL sheepskin ear pads

Thanks. Oh well... it's a shame that the construction's engineering it's even worst thought than previous models, but with modding we can do it. The audio qualities of the driver deserve it. It's just that i wasn't expecting to have even this problem on them, and thinking about the fact that different pads affect the balance, well... the project goes a bit in a more personal way to find the balance wanted, and the budget is affected as well. Anyway, Superlux need to seriously rethink about what they want to do in the future, on the headphone's segment. We have choose to gave them a possibility with this headphone, but it's obviously that they can't go higher in price with something so cheaply constructed. Unless they want to produce and sell 681 and 668b until the end of time. A lot of audio enthusiast may say the same things of voa , build-wise, and see Superlux's headphone not as an audio bargain but more like plastic crap putted around a good driver. How deny that ? On the Evo's the headband may broke mostly because of the short height adjustment possibility, the internal soldering between the external male jack and headphone is bad, with so tiny wires, and it's the reason of those microphonics, the ear space on the 688 is ridiculous ( at least to me ) and solderdude find the one in the 671's prototype even worst. Seriously... why not have at least one top of the range model, with good build quality ? I want to see some measurements of that microphonic noise first before I start to solder better wiring. Previous models had bad, messy and tiny space to solder better wires.
