They could lose a bit of their character. ie: that floorstanders bass.
Have you got an equaliser? Try using the equaliser on the X1. It's not too bad. You can then lower the bass and hear it in a different way perhaps.
Fran's filters are, in effect, equalisers. He also damps the cups and changes pads, but at least you could get a flavour of what to expect.
Try lowering everything, roughly the same amount from 200 down, between 5 - 10 db.

extending the cups out just one notch on each side has increased the seal as you suggested mate. much improved. plugging them into my Ember as opposed to my x1 moves them to another level, which is to be expected i suppose. i think i may have to take back my last comment here. i dont know whether i have just adjusted to their sound, but now i am finding little difference between playing from my X1(un-amped) and my desktop system/ Ember. maybe i have lost the plot.

They are very sensitive Simon. Don't need a lot to drive them.
If what you're listening to is compressed, the won't be much difference.
I let a minimally compressed orchestral recording loose on my Ember and the D600 near throws me through the window on loud timp passages.
I adjusted to their sound fairly easily and they do have this matured, deep speaker sound to them that is rare. If you change to something else quickly, you'll notice how edgy things can sound by comparison.
I tend not to amp them since they are so sensitive in any case.

I can only correct the bottom end. It would have to be based on GE measurements.
The dip at 300Hz cannot be corrected and will even become a bit deeper.
A filter module will sound 'somewhat similar' to the X1 with the 60Hz slider pulled down to -5dB and the 160Hz slider to -3dB. Try these settings ...
The wobbly FR can not be 'unwobbled' Overall the sonic signature is quite decent and extends well. Only the exaggerated bass stands in the way of being neutral sounding

Only the exaggerated bass stands in the way of being neutral sounding just tried those settings playing Dire Straits walk of life, the bloated bass is tamed nicely. i assume more could be achieved with more bands on the eq? (if i new what i was doing). very happy with this combo though.

can i assume there would be little to no benefit from adding a portable amp and using the dap's line out? (specifically for the d600)

The dap's line out is better than headphone out. It's cleaner. Try feeding it into your amp. It's quite amazing.
I don't think eq will work via line out though.
With eq, you can try raising 400 slightly in the hope that it takes a bit of the 300 dip away. About 2 or 3 db? It might lessen it.

Adding a portable amp with a higher current capability will give more headroom/power/volume. When you feel you cannot go loud enough with the X1 an amp will provide that extra power. Only when the X1 plays loud enough for you and feel the SQ is good enough with or without EQ an amp for the X1 will be somewhat pointless. The power stage in the X1 is a simple opamp, using a 'normal' portable amp won't be more capable. When connecting it to a more powerful amp the benefits can be there. The EQ a filter module can provide is more accurate than 2 peak filters that aren't at the exact frequency you would need. The X1 EQ bands aren't correcting precisely enough, they can give you an idea of what signature you can expect.
Of course most portable amps cannot really deliver much power, the Kameleon is specifically designed to drive 'difficult' headphones and less suited for very sensitive IEMs etc.
I don't know the X1 but I do know the line-out of the X3 is of slightly higher quality than the HP out of the X3.

Same with the X1 with regards to the line out.

ahh maybe i wont bother then. i thought an amp from line-out of my X1 may help to improve sq from the d600 (not that i am unhappy with it) and also ,in the rare event when i would have the opportunity to use the X1 with my lcd2, improve that too!

The quality is better, Simon. It's a bit cleaner sounding. Just slightly.

In case anyone bought an ah-d600, they're back at virtually £320 again now, so that'll make you feel better!! You got it half price. It's one of the few that I use portable that actually reaches low bass fully!!

Yes, I like them Simon. I don't know many that go down to the bass like that. It's elevated but still very very low, which makes them quite distinctive.
