Nice review Ian. I wished we had more reviews like this one.

I think I agree with pretty much everything that has been said here. But I also have to say that I do hear clear sonic differences between using my Mac headphone jack and my Ember, and I think I can notice difference in sound when I change the tube family in my Ember, especially with resolving headphones like HD650 and HE400i. But there is a lot of non-sense written all over audiophile forums. Cables (and cables direction!!) is a can of worms, I just ignore that can of stuff.
For a while I struggled with "brightness" in headphones. I thought my HE400i were "bright" when everyone around described them as very dark. It turns out that it was a "peak" in the upper mids that irritated me constantly. Frans solved that problem with a Kameleon inline filter. I really struggled to put my finger on it because my brain was not/is not trained to identify those things. But I know I was annoyed with something in the upper end.
The problem of listening to music is that human brain is very good at correlating things. When you listen to music, you will immediately recognise the tones even with a poor player or a cheap set of headphones. But identifying differences provided by equipment is harder. An analogy...an expert in wines will tell you about "subtleties" (berries, vanilla, chocolate, fried chicken) in taste that to me are just like regular wine.
My two cents...just enjoy whatever sounds pleasantly good to you, and also your wallet will be happier!

:-) Just google "requiem itunes". I had to install a very old version of iTunes but it still worked in my case. The beauty of requiem is that it does not re-encode the audio, but it removes the "scrambling" of the bytes using the DRM key. Therefore you don't loose quality.

Don't get me started....
I finally managed to remove the drm protection of my legaly bought books so I can actually listen to them on my non-apple phone!

I have to say that lately I have been jumping from Polaris to ember at my office. With the Chameleon filter and HD650 I actually prefer the Ember with a Bad Boy 6SN7GT over Polaris. The bass extension and bass amount is simply astonishing and it never gets harsh in the upper end. With the HE-400i + Kameleon module, I prefer Polaris. To be honest I am not sure why, because both headphones (when filtered) sound pretty flat to me, but each to these combinations seem to engage me optimally ;-)
Nice to hear that you like your Polaris, it is a very good amp. Adding the Kameleon filters to my system has left me finally wanting nothing else, I am sonically satisfied! EDIT: Well...not really true...this coming summer I would like to build my own portable Kameleon-2 to be able to travel with it! :-)

Thanks for the info Frans, I think I will pass on getting a new 6N6P replacement and just keep using the rest of tubes that I have around.

My old 6N6P tube is starting to degrade after more than 2 years. I think it was more used than the seller sadly promised in the add when I bought it. Although I asked this question before, it got buried rapidly without an answer...so here it goes again :-) : I have also found some cheapish 6N26P tubes that seem rather similar to the 6N6P. Has anyone had any experience with those? Would they work in the Ember?

Mark, that is a great price and if I did not have one Ember and one Polaris already I would jump immediately on it!!

I am 99.9999999% sure you are right :-) I think that is why the G1217 Kameleon can be bought with PS or bypass cable.

So... I finally got a full week of continuous listening to the Kameleonized HD650. I also brought my Polaris to the office just out of curiosity. I have to say that I have enjoyed this particular headphone better with the Polaris than with my Ember, unlike my HD400i that seems to shine better with Ember. Anyhow, I think I have a new favorite pair of cans. The reason why I am liking very much the HD650 is not that I "hear new stuff" but rather that they produce a very very pleasant sound signature without strident peaks or glare, but retaining all the detail that I could ever hear in those tracks. The module fills the sub-bass nicely and I think I hear some extra extension in the upper end, but it is rather subtle (I hope it is not placebo effect!). With Eric Clapton's Unplugged, the effect is remarkable! Although they are tonally correct, I am having a bit more "fun" in the bass department with the filtered HD650 than with my filtered HE400i. I also suspect that my D2000 will collect dust for a while :-) Thanks Frans and oldson for your help with the filter module and heads-up on the HD650 deal (respectively!), totally worth it!

Just managed to finally get some time to solder the last two missing SMD resistors to my HD650 filter module. I am listening to it at the moment and the effect is quite nice :-) But I need to listen a bit more before I can make up my mind about all the changes that I can perceive from the filter.

I had a similar experience when I tried to buy an espresso machine some time ago. It turned out to be a hacked amazon account that suddenly started to offer way too cheap products. Amazon refunded my money without trouble...

It is mostly large-size component, it should be quite ok. Good luck, the amp is great!
