If they want to keep increase, more and more, the price of their new products, they certainly need to start thinking about comfort and overall build quality ( plastic, cable, ear space and height adjustment )

I've casually found a promotional image of both the 688 and 687, from NAMM2017 ( january ), so is not new. The stock HD688 just appear a little better looking, with that circle, over the prototype.

Rabbit send me his pair of Superlux HD387, so i start talking about mine Rock Zircon, for comparison. I’m surely not an expert, more accustomed to cheap headphones, especially on the way, and speaker sound, so take it with a grain of salt. The Rock Zircons are a very cheap pair of IEM (around 10€/$), that has a sort of ceramic housing, looking good and solid, and silicon tips. Isolation, sealing and comfort are good. The cable is not as good. It is coated and feels rigid between the jack and the split, than the cable is divided in two without the same coating material and this part suffer a bit of microphonics. Both the splitting part and the T form jack junction seem to me week point, in term of durability. Than the audio. The first thing noticeable is surely how the bass kicking and the subbass is deep, immersive, but too much imho. Even if they are considered v-shaped, i find them enough clearer on the mids, just a bit recessed, but neutral. Highs feels a bit bright and sometime harsh to me, but i’m very sensitive to sibilance and other harder sound. I found the soundstage to be average. So, the sound signature is surely not flat, but unique and engaging for an IEM this cheap. Personally i’d prefer to do some EQ on them, mostly for lower the subbass. AudioBudget graph: Obviously, they are intended to be a contender in the cheap market.

The velour/velvet pads on the 687/688 prototype are different compared to the ones sold with the actually 681/662 Evo models, or they are the same, apart from the fact that the color look more purplish ?

Good to know So, sounding aside, between the pads you have tried on this and other Superlux model, which do you think is the most comfortable ?

Inside the Superlux thread of head-fi someone have posted this image: The Beyers DT990 velour pads can suit good on the HD668b, or others and future Superlux models ( 687/688 prototype ) ? They cost much, but look so damn comfortable.

Somerthing I think some people mean by 'depth' is about the same as 'sitting X rows back' or 'front seat'. This seems top have a really high correlation to frequency response. The less 'presence/clarity' the 'further back' the sound is evaluated. Similar to sitting in a venue. The closer you are to the band the more upper mids/treble you can hear. All the way in the back there is more massive lows and less clarity. Perhaps that is meant by 'depth' ? Probably. Personally, when i feel some frequency recessed is like there is a sort of distance, some depth in the sound, like two or more stratus.

As long as you like them, that's what really matters. I think many people worry about what everyone else likes!!!! Anyway, i think that buying some cheap stuff and see how others describes them, as long that it don't becoming a troubling addiction ( ), can be useful for better understanding what you are looking for. Then some becoming satisfied, others start to think bigger... and expensive. However, is difficult to spend much on a single equipment without try them or have a clear idea of its sounding features. What everyone else likes, yes, is not important, but descriptions and measurements are really damn useful. Obviously, mods are too... how can i possibly thinking of putting toilet paper inside an headphone for tame a peak ?!?

In the end though, you may end up like me ..... buy loads of cheapies only to find that in the end, the more expensive ones actually sound a lot better. I know... I like mine Zircons, anyway. The bass tend to be muddy and EQ is really needed, but overall they are comfortable and good enough for portable use.

Returning in topic, the modifications of the 687 prototype appear much risky and costly, touching the driver e buying another pair of pads, compared with the good performance of the stock 688 proto and simpler modifications. The 687 have some others advantage over the 688 ?
If they remain the same, from your testing the HD688 seem to me a better bargain.

I have tinnitus (a few months now) and have become VERY sensitive to distortion and treble peaks and the HD688 with 1 ply of toilet paper and velvet pads does not trigger any beeps in my ear. Me too, so i'm very happy to hear it. I sure wait for see your testing and modding when the final product will be released
