On the one hand, Ember. On the other, Polaris.
Ember, Polaris. Ember, Polaris. Ember, Polaris...

Kameleon!! All three? You know, there was another that I really liked ..... The Horizon. I missed that for a long time!!!! Sod it, I'm moving into the Garage. It is difficult to choose. I can't really, between Ember and Polaris. The Ember is more 'colourful' sounding. You can hear that it has a tube for sure and so the sound is lovely and rich. The Polaris is less rich, but my sensible head tells me that it's less harmonic laden and more 'sensible' sounding. They are both very adjustable so that's not an issue. I get very attracted to the cleanness of the Polaris and then the colourful nature of the Ember. So I swing back and forth. It also depends what headphone I'm using. I tend to use the Polaris with a DT150 which seems a good match and the Senn with the Ember - it's mid bass hump and richness is nice with the Ember. Now the Kameleon has transformed my Sennheiser (with the sound shaping) I've felt that it's the one that truly matches the Sennheiser by a huge amount. Don't get me wrong; I know that many like the colour of the Senn and would complain that it has been taken away from the headphone, but once you get away from strong colourations, they start to become the bain of all headphones in all honesty. You begin to realise just how biased headphones are and a little tweaking in the right direction and they become a different thing altogether. It also doesn't take too much tweaking in some cases. If you are going to stick with the Senn, you might be happier with the Ember that you've now learned the sound of if you like. It is a flat amp sure enough. You're hearing the richness of harmonics which makes many think that it has a raised bass. It doesn't. The harmonic content kind of fools the ears. For me, the Kameleon is 'right' and brings the Senn to another level. I really couldn't choose between the Ember and Polaris. Depends whether you really enjoy the richness of tubes or not. The Polaris kind of adds a 'flavour' of tubes so it seems less fruity, but it's no less engaging as an amp. All of these amps are quite revolutionary in a way and represent a totally new way to access music in a more 'engaging' way, which, let's face it, that's what hi fi should really be about. Engaging the listener. Fran's sign off on his posts is absolutely true!!!

I would have been very happy with the Ember but now that I've seen how the Polaris looks with this black top-plate I'm torn. I like the extra headroom the Ember has over the O2 but the Polaris would give me that too. What I do not know is how much the improvement over the O2 is down to that extra power and/or the added harmonics of the valve.

I can have the Polaris send over so you can compare them side by side to the Ember and O2.

I can have the Polaris send over so you can compare them side by side to the Ember and O2. That's an incredible offer Frans but I can't accept it. I already feel like I've overstretched the amount of time I've had the Ember. I'll send the Ember on to wherever it needs to go first before I decide anything. Today I'm going to unplug the Ember for the first time since I received it and I'll switch to the O2 for a couple of days. I think I have a pretty good understanding now of what the Ember is and isn't capable of so any differences should be immediately obvious to me. Or I'm deaf. We shall see. Thank you again for the offer though. You've no idea how good it is to meet people who give a damn. My world has not exactly been flooded with those kind of people in the past. Gordon.

The Polaris has finished its tour in Denmark and is either being sent home to me or it could be sent to you. For the person in Denmark the costs are the same. The Ember will also be going to me after you are finished with it. As you have to ship it back to me anyway and the costs for shipping 2 amps my way is (probably) the same as one it wouldn't matter for you. I am in no hurry to get the amps back at this moment so .....

It wouldn't be cheaper for Gordon unless he shipped both amps to you (which is a possibility) and you could ship both of them to me afterwards. I would have no problems with that.
Or, I could have the Polaris sent to you directly in case Gordon still declines the offer.
I need to know within a few days though... I promised the Danish guy I would let him now where to send it soon.

Here we go Just got back from my laser engraver / cutter. All turned out beautiful and exactly as planned. Dead sexy in person. I really thought the weight would not increase much but to my surprise, these babies feel hefty now when assembled. I guess from a designers point of view, showing parts in production does not come across well to the end user. But once you see the assembled product - it rather pops Time to eat humble pie Jeremy, from the prototypes I thought it would look awful, got to admit though it sure does look good It makes it look expensive and sets it apart from all the other open frame amps out there. It gets my vote. Other options maybe different colours? and maybe some sort of lead filled feet to add even more weight to it? Only a thought
